Ball of Batteries Re-Energizes Old Trash
Posted by Mark Wilson at 2:00 AM on September 27, 2008
By artist Michel de Broin, the Dead Star is a sculpture formed from batteries at the end of their functional life. He explains, "Left to itself, the sculpture will slowly cool down since there is no longer electronic activity taking place in it." On exhibit at the Eyebeam Centre for Art and Technology in New York, we enjoy the sculpture because it perpetually looks like it's about to explode. [Michel de Broin via MAKE]

@schtum: Clearly he was spinning a little artistic license there.

@Curves Wants a Classic View Default: Perhaps the artist was trying to convey that we, as a society consume far too much energy and precious resources while giving very little back in return...
..On the other hand maybe he was just bored one day and had a bunch of spent batteries lying around.

Cool down? Why is it warm to begin with? There are no closed circuits shown in that photo. And of course there's no electronic activity taking place in it, because batteries aren't electronic!

@Curves Wants a Classic View Default:
Sometimes, I think it takes an artist to appreciate some of the art work that's out there.
That being said...Here is what I see when I look at the "blob-o-batteries": Chemicals leaking ALL over the place in a few years.

I know I am not an artist or anything, but, this looks like a pile of dead batteries to me. Thats it. It doesnt say anything, its not pretty, it doesnt convey a message. Its just trash. Maybe I am too much a realist but, well, its pointless.

As a Mets fan, I think it needs more D cell batteries if I'm going to be taking it to a game.

@Y2KGTP: Du-Du-Du-Dura! It's Dura-pet, the pet that warms itself. Just soak Dura-pet in a bowl of salty water, and watch it shock you dead when you reach in to pull it out! Available at all Quick Cheks, K-Marts, Duane Reed drug stores, and anywhere else fine quality goods are sold.

@Jrsy is the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another du...: This is why the proposed legislation on Hot Glue Guns should be passed. I want a 21 days waiting period, stricter licensing guidelines, background checks, and a ban on high capacity glue sticks.

This guy should sell these things. I'd buy one, and if I got tired of it, I could put it in my microwave and really make it blow up.

I want one with a subwoofer in it, and the batteries push in and out in time with the music, each battery moving randomly.

The leaking batteries will be the best part, natural decay... self acting performance art.
