Apple Is So Creative
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 12:00 PM on September 11, 2008
One of the things I was really blown away by yesterday was the sheer number of colours in the new iPod rainbow. I don't think I've ever seen that many hues of an MP3 Player. Where did they get them all??

Apple said on the CNBC interview the iPod nano 'fatty' was liked but not 'loved' .....that people gave feedback that they like the long & narrow format .... I think they are after more market share. You have to keep in mind Apple has sold some 160 million iPods..... each year it's going to be hard to not only sell as many iPods as last year but sell MORE

Man, if this isn't flamebait on Gizmodo's part, I don't know what is.
Here's the thing though: it's great that there's more choice of color. So others had more before. It doesn't mean Apple copied them, especially considering the hues don't even really match up, and doubly so if you factor in, as others have noted, that these colors are basically Apple's retro logo color scheme.
On a more personal note, I can't decide between blue and orange. They're both my favorite colors, which makes this so hard. Input, anybody?

I think these colors might be a mistake. Because it is going to be very hard to predict the right number of each color to produce. The result of failing to predict the right color means they are more likely to have too many of a certain color, which means left over unwanted colors. Left over colors will mean a loss to Apple as they try to unload those colors when the next update comes along. Maybe we can play a game predicting the color that will be last and left unwanted in the discount bin in about 9 months. I'm also predicting no updates for a longer than normal period of time because that will give them time to sell through the losers.
I'm probably buying the iTouch anyway. Winter is coming and with large coats and clothing to wear, the space saving of a Nano becomes less important than the added functionality of the iTouch. Price is basically the same for both of these products as far as I'm concerned. But I'll check them out in person at some point over the weekend and maybe I'll feel different once they are in my hand.

But that's not what favorite is all about. Favorite is facing your own private "Sophie's Choice" and making the hard decision. Blue... orange... orange... blue.... It's not so much the color itself as much as the importance of wholeheartedly embracing one. It must be one. Then, and only then, will it truly be your favorite. I have an assload of music on my Zune80, but sometimes I wanna see if the local rock station is playing any good new music, or listen to a morning show. you can pretty easily find a slew of new music podcasts that will sync to your ipod ever week. there's also music blogs, etc. I for one don't think that listening to a radio while on the go is really the best place to discover new music anyways,
i tend to be more pro-active in finding what's out there and new rather than listening to the same bland 50 song playlist that most corporate radio has nowadays.
i guess you're right about the morning show thing though.

@digicatz: Some of us listen to public radio stations. Others listen to jazz or classical music on the radio. Still others listen to progressive and experimental music.
Here in NY, we have WNYC, a public radio station which also offers a BBC radio feed every morning. There's also WQXR which is NY's only all-classical music station which is respected nationwide for its playlists. Additionally, there's WFUV, NYC's leading college radio station.
There's also the benefit of getting weather, traffic, and news updates for free - which you can't get from a Genius playlist.

We won't point out that the only reason ZEN came out with 10 colors is that Apple had a few with their original MINI-now NANO ... so of course, Zen's response was:
ADD FM! - what people want is commercials and static!
If they can do 4 colors, by golly, we'll do 10!
Or in Zune speak - what colors haven't they done? Brown? Brown is Bill Gates shoe color! Delicious! Brilliant!
That's why some companies have 3% of the market.

@clearthumbtack: True. But someone also came up with the word "pod" long before Apple came along with their new toy, AND appended it to an electronic device linked to music (Line 6) before Apple. But that doesn't stop Jobs et al suing every company in the world who even think about using the name in their products - even those which have nothing to do with audio/visual electronics.
Indeed, Apple threated a small company with legal action after they called a product "Profit Pod". It was a freaking infrared data collection system for arcade machines! Yet Appple had no problem giving a new handheld device which plays music, video, displays internet, pictures etc etc the name "Touch". HTC Touch, anybody? Handheld device which plays music, video, displays internet, pictures etc etc. But the HTC is a phone people say? Yes, but the iPod is a music player and the Profit Pod was nothing remotely similar. And what about the Creative Zen "Touch"?
One rule for Apple, another for the rest of the world. And money buys good lawyers for dictatorial, messianic assholes. In this case and others, Apple are fair game I say.

As others have noted, the original Apple logo included the colors of the rainbow. It's easy to see the link between the colors of the new Nano line and the original rainbow colored Apple logo. Now as for the Creative colors, what do they harken to? Is there some original Creative logo with all those colors?
