App Store Blacklist: Podcaster Too iTunesy
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 9:30 AM on September 13, 2008
The latest casualty in Apple's App Store blacklisting is Podcaster. A native app built according to exact SDK specifications, it goes beyond its creator's web-bound streaming-only Podcaster.fm by letting you download and manage podcasts in a nice straightforward interface. Insidious, right? Apple thought so.
According to Podcaster's blog, Apple at least explained why it booted Podcaster from the App Store: "Since Podcaster assists in the distribution of podcasts, it duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes."
The funny thing to David Chartier at Ars—who broke the news—is that so many other approved apps duplicate Apple-made functions, like the calculator and the stopwatch.
The funny thing to me is that podcasting was a grassroots thing that Apple coopted only after it had blown up on the internet. This has nothing to do with playing back copyright-protected music—it's just a manager for freely distributed internet content. What next, Apple bans other people from building software to access third-party web pages via the iPhone? Oh wait... that's pretty much already happened.
If you still want to check out the Podcaster app, you can sign up here, and the developer will e-mail you back with instructions. They say it will be distributed ad hoc—so no jailbreak required—for a donation of $9.99, but if it gets popular, we don't know how the ad-hoc distribution system would hold up. (I thought there was a limit of 100 for that, but maybe I'm wrong.) [Ars Technica]

@The Magnificen7:
Really? You bought an iPhone and have then purchased all the smartphones released after it?
Bullshit.
Look, I'm happy you like the iPhone and it is a great phone; it's just ridiculous that you're hogtied to iTunes to put anything on it and that you can only get your software from the app store.
Nice hardware, shit software service.

@Thallid: You're crazy. I've had all the major smartphones, and would not trade in my iPhone if my life depended on it (well, maybe I would, but I already punched out a would-be iPhone mugger) You must not know a whole lot about Apple customers. Or grammar. Or anything.

Man Apple is totally destroying their own reputation with this iPhone. They are going to get hit with an Anti-Trust lawsuit in a few weeks because this is the same thing that Microsoft did--block other services from installing and taking priority over Microsoft's own apps like Outlook and Messenger.

And people complain about Microsoft, Eventually all the apple fan boys and girls are going to get sick of Darth Jobs and whack him by moving on to something else like Drummer_Boy said "a real smartphone". Maybe we should see if the Apple Dev rules using the SDK blend? Wait that likely violates the ToS. Well Darth Jobs, I hope you get what your working so hard to achieve which by the way your going with this..I am betting you'll eventually piss off your core customer base and end up losing a lot of money, not enough to go broke, but enough to matter to you.

That's a shame. The argument that other apps are replicating other Apple functions is a valid one. I guess Apple is holding podcasting close to the chest. Weird all around.

I've thrown my iPhone on the ground from frustration.
Well when I say ground, I mean a bed or a couch. I wouldn't want to destroy something so pretty. :)
Only problem is, the iPhone is a lot like a pretty blonde cheerleader. Beautiful to look at and fun to fool around with, but not a whole lot going on under the surface and not something you can count on during tough times or something you can expect to work hard for very long...

@Drummer_Boy: Not many smartphones have been released after the iPhone 3G. I have already used some of those as well, but haven't owned, including the Bold. Otherwise, I've owned phones from HTC, Palm, RIM, Motorola, Samsung, Nokia and HP.
Being tied to iTunes sounds worse than it is. The iPhone was built for that service, making it perfect(ish) for the device. The App Store has thousands of Apps all in one place, and reviews built right in. That is much easier than hunting for Apps on WM phones or other OSs all over the damn place. If you really want, you can jailbreak it, and bam, software from Cydia (for free), which will have anything else you need. The software is improving, but remember, Apple is fairly new to the phone game. My WM Treo 750 crashed at least 5 times a day, and I have experienced almost nothing like that with my iPhone. I am very content with the iPhone, and can't really ever see myself with any other phone for the rest of my life.
The iPhone is popular, therefore, the problems are more publicized. I have actually thrown phones to the ground in disgust after it crashes again while trying to input an important contact.

Not being able to easily get podcasts through Apple's own software is just frickin' weird and damned annoying. Someone else does it and they slam 'em down? Geez, Jobs, kick someone working there in the nuts for me and tell 'em to get it right. Folks want this crap - give it to them or let others give it. Don't sit on it - or we'll do the same to you and have ourselves a merry dump in the process. I'm an Apple fanboy but I really hate tards.
Cheers.

@The Magnificen7: agreed about WM phones! I had a lot of those as well and nothing compares to the way iTunes and the iPhone work together. Everytime I connected a WM phone to a PC activsync never seemed to see it. That made installing programs a real pain.
Apple's position on this app is wrong and inconsistent. It dos make me worry where Apple is heading but for now I'll enjoy the tech.

While itms and the iphone are a great one-stop solution, I do prefer the freedom to push any bits I want onto my WM device. Yes, the ihone is sexy. But I like my sad little juno/shadow better.
Pulling this app from the store because it might COMPETE with itunes is just sad and makes apple look like scared little wusses.
Then again iTunes looks like it was crafted using Visual Basic in 1998, so maybe they should be a bit protectionist. The Apple Marketing Reality Distortion Filter can only hide the dated look of their apps for so long.

woah... so this app lets you download podcasts on the go?
correct me if im wrong but you cant do that from the mobile itunes store on the touch or iphone can you??
so why are apple stopping someone from fixing something they screwed up on???
(or have apple updated something that allows you to download podcasts from the wifi itunes store? cos if they have ill buy an ipod touch today :D lol)

@The Magnificen7:
I take your point but if the computer doesn't have iTunes on it then you're kind of screwed. I can drag and drop onto BB's and WinMo (incidentally I use an Omnia with 6.1 and it's crashed twice in two weeks, both times due to my dumbassery) from pretty much anywhere.
I find Apple's approach annoying and inconvenient.

My PSP has the ability to wake itself up at 4am, log on to my wifi and update all the video and audio podcasts I subscribe to. I've wanted the same ability from my iPhone, and figured it was just a matter of time before someone came up with a good app to do that. Never did I think that Apple would stop such an application. Apple doesn't even make any money from podcasts, so why should they care? How does this app interfere with anything?
This kind of thing is what kills developer enthusiasm for a platform. It's not just about this app, it's about developers not knowing if they make something cool whether Apple will think it's too cool and might interfere with their existing or potential future business model. It will certainly harm the iPhone as a platform if Apple doesn't take a lighter hand in disallowing applications.

Good thing I waited for the Android phones.
Not because I think it will be better, but because I do se it as a true competitor to iPhone. WHich hopefully will change a bunch of things wrong with the apps store.

@weatherman:
"Apple doesn't even make any money from podcasts, so why should they care? How does this app interfere with anything?"
This interferes with iTunes being the provider of podcasts, and iTunes can eventually make them money via music sales, so if you eliminate exposure to the iTunes store (in any way), you limit the amount of content a person will purchase, therefore, this interferes with them making money.
Its still a very sleazy thing to do on Apples part. The idea of an App store is a good one, but it is horribly managed. Remember, this guy/girl paid 99 bucks to even make this app, and Apple pulls it. Thats 99 bucks down the drain. Way to attack your greatest fans Apple.

@The Magnificen7:
I guess the iPhone is popular in the fact that people like to talk about them, but they represent a very small percentage of phones out there. Even more so a small percentage of so called "smart phones". Hell, iPhones make up a small percentage (about 25%) of all touch screen smart phones sold. So, sure they're popular, I guess.[www.crunchgear.com]

All this makes me glad I didn't buy an iPhone. Stability issues, lack of decent 3G support, and having to march in lockstep with Apple (think the original 1986 ad, but reverse the antagonists). I'll stick with my Treo for now, and upgrade to another true smartphone when the opportunity arises.
