Anti-Dealzmodo: New iPods Don't Qualify for Apple Back to School Promo
Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:16 PM on September 10, 2008
If you tuned into Giz yesterday, you may have noticed, if you looked really hard, that Apple released a few new iPods. And if you are a college student, maybe you realised that since the new iPods were available as of yesterday, they slipped right in for Apple's Back to School promotion (buy a new Mac, get an 8GB nano/touch free) that goes through Sept 15th. Unfortunately, a call to Apple retail revealed that Apple will not be honouring new iPods in this deal despite similar pricing. Sorry, college kids, I guess you'll just have to be happy with copious amounts of casual sex and inexpensive beer instead. [robreed]

@TommySez: so true. Plus the previous gen nanos make more sense.

Well, duh. The back to school promo is how they dumped inventory of soon to be obsolete iPods.
And, frankly, a free first gen iTouch is better than a $229 2nd gen. :)

Is this really all that surprising? After all, we all assumed the Back to School promo was part of the product dump to prepare for the new iPods anyway.

Lest we forget, for the last 3 years at least, at the end of the back to school iPod promo, that iPod was replaced with a new one, and the new one didn't qualify. Boo freakin' hoo.

Quick! Everyone over to Consumerist for how to launch a EECB and tips for contacting Steve Jobs to get them to give you a new iPod rather than an old one ;)

Ok,, the uk, not only having to may more for macs in the first place, don't have a back to school promo, so fora stuent buying an ipod n a mac in the uk compared to the us, its ALOT more expensive. why the hell haven't they released their promo in the uk yet?

@Joseph: No. It's how you follow someone. In essence, I think you are adding them as a favorite, and the favorite icon for the articles is a heart. I do miss the cool reply arrows we had yesterday for like 20 minutes.

As far as the deal goes, this is pretty standard. Apple is predictable as releases go. Every summer they clear out all the old hardware to sell new hardware in the fall. You can just go to Mac Rumors Buyers Guide to see their trends. The best thing to do with the iPods is get em mid-summer and then sell em on Craigslist of ebay. You'll usually be able to make enough to pay for most of the next generation hardware that comes out in the fall which is why my Macbook Pro is going on sale this weekend.
On a side note, does anyone else see hearts next to peoples names? I think my gizmodo is broken :(.

@Git Em SteveDave loves this guy-->: LOL, I think it's funny how this is a production site that they are just updating during peak use. Gizmodo should do a monthly announcement of new features that were integrated. sometimes I don't notice stuff until a few weeks in.

This does suck because i wanted in on this deal. On the other hand i am going to get a 16g for the same price as the 8g was 2 days ago. But instead, i will get 70$ less back from rebates
-old rebate for 8g = 299$: After rebates = 0$
-new rebate for 16g = 229$: After rebates = 70$
~still a good deal because i wanted the 16g anyways :D

Surely no one expected APPLE to honor that. They were only giving them away in the first place because they had stock to get rid of that no one would pay full price for once the new ipod's came out. Apple does nothing that doesn't benefit them.

Next thing you know, car dealers won't be honoring end-of-model-year close-outs on next year's cars.
Sorry, but this should be a big "duh" moment. I'm not saying you shouldn't have reported it, I'm just surprised this article was actually informative to many readers.

Strange. One of my roommates got a quote from the on-campus bookstore's Apple sales department last night. I even asked them flat out if the new rebate changed accordingly for the new price of the iPod Touch at $230 and a salesperson picked up a memo, read it, and said yes.

Did anyone actually think the new ones would be in the promo?
