Adobe Added Multitouch to Creative Suite 4, Didn't Tell Anyone
Posted by John Herrman at 8:45 PM on September 25, 2008
Content producers of pretty much any ilk were excited to get news of the highly refined, newly hardware-accelerated CS4 product line, but probably missed this key feature buried deep in the release notes: multitouch trackpad support.
MacBook Air and late model MacBook Pro users can now pinch, spread, and twist in Photoshop just like they already can in iPhoto. Even better, all users can take advantage of a new "throw" feature, which lets you choose to toss objects across the screen. Could this be timed to correspond with multitouch trackpad capability in the next generation of MacBooks? Sorry, let me rephrase that: this better be timed to correspond with multitouch trackpads in new MacBooks, or else. [MacRumors via Wired]

multitouch trackpad support is a key feature?
I would think that the hardware acceleration and 64-bit support would be key features, not squeezing and spreading to zoom.
I guess macs have to make up for no 64-bit support somehow. Seems like a fair trade.

You mean: you missed it. Others noted the feature.

This could actually be pretty cool. Give you alternate ways to transform images and apply filters in Photoshop.

@diabolusunknownTheSecond: I think they mean "key feature" as in that it's a big hint as to what might be coming down the road from apple...

Moreover, I don't any advanced photoshop users who don't use the keyboard shortcuts for almost all the stuff you'd use pinch/spread, rotate or toss for. The mouse only comes out for wonky transformations or localized corrections or other stuff like that.

a nice thought...but i think the multitouch track pad is such a lame gimik
will there be REAL multi touch support for future true multi touch computer releases?

Yesterday, 4pm. I was working from home on 2 different websites at once, one on my pc the other one in macbook pro with the trackpad.
actually I'm faster with the trackpad and the laptop in my bed than using a mouse.

This seems kind of pointless. When was the last time you decided to use a trackpad instead of a mouse in Photoshop?

Ummm, while new Macbooks would be nice, the Macbook Pro already has the multitouch trackpads. This seems more aimed toward them.

Useless IMO, who uses the trackpad for PS work anyway? Well, I guess if you just putz around a bit it's ok and the multitouch is a nice gimmick, but I'm sure I could run circles around a trackpad user on a wacom or even with a regular mouse.

Today. Mac trackpads are a completely different game because of their size.

I recommend (mac users) waiting till CS5. All this CS4 merely does is placate the (stock holders of Adobe) Windows folks. "I'm a PC and I design in Photoshop!" (real designers will get that one)

...so this is useful whenever I use my trackpad in Photoshop.
When the hell is that? xD

I could see this maybe being useful / fun on something like the HP Touchsmart or a tablet PC, but other than that, I can't see the use. I only use the trackpad when I absolutely have to, Photoshop or anywhere else.

Are you stupid? Well, are you?
OS X has 64-bit support. It was there since Panther, which, I'd like to remind you, was well before even Windows XP began to support it.
Sure, Apple had to drop down to 32-bit during their transition to Intel hardware, but that was Intel's problem at that point. Now that Intel's Xeon and Core processor lines are 64-bit processors, OS X has 64-bit support.
I suggest you do at least a shred of research before posting.

Well, I graciously accept your rebuttal.
Looking at that note though, I am happy. Causalities are inevitable when certain features are axed, and I'm glad to see Apple still has the balls to cut away legacy crap.

@KLanD:
I can't think of anyone that would use just a trackpad, even a multitouch one, but I do know plenty of people that use Apple's in conjunction with a mouse.
Now that Photoshop has multitouch support, I could easily see people using it in conjunction with a Wacom tablet.

Now that its hardware accelerated does this mean that I can't use this program, much like I can't play any games with my 950GMA integrated chipset?

@thebigcheese:
The trackpad on the MBA and MBP is a joy to use. Toss in a Wacom stylus, and it would make Photoshop all the sweeter to use.
The only thing Apple could do at this point to make its trackpad better would be to make it oval, for use as a scroll wheel or a jog shuttle dial.

@SigmundTheSeaMonster: Maybe my cynicism is causing me to miss your 'joke' here, but if you are implying that 'real' designers only use apple hardware, would you care to explain why? Really. Tell me why I'm not a real designer because I'm typing this on a Thinkpad instead of a Macbook Pro. Is my paycheck fake? Are my degrees fake? They must be, and it's all because I paid $1000 less for a PC laptop with equal specs to the MacBook Pro!

@KLanD:
Clearly you haven't used a multitouch trackpad for any extended period of time. Really handy device, especially used in conjunction with a mouse.
The point is that now that Photoshop supports all those nifty gestures like pinch and twist, people will be using a trackpad in Photoshop, likely alongside a tablet.

@SigmundTheSeaMonster:
I'm a designer, and I have a mac. I'm still going to buy CS4. Mainly because now Flash supports 3d natively. No more papervision. Not all designers are print designers... And the whole PC thing. You can buy a desktop more powerful than a mac pro for much cheaper. If you work with any combination of Adobe products, Maya, or high end 3d apps, you probably want to cut your overhead as much as possible. But thats just me, you may like dropping extra money just so you can make "jokes" like you just did.

this is very cool, i wish Firefox would integrate some of the controls though, i always try the 3 swipe for going back on a page and then realize it won't work. *sigh*

You guys seem to be really missing the possibilities here. Dell's XT tablet already has a capacitive multitouch screen. Multitouch tablet screen + multitouch image and layout software = really big win.

@geekpi: You do have a point there. This WOULD work well with a multitouch screen. Unlike the above mentioned "Lets us a trackpad AND a tablet at the same time!" remark, this would actually be quite practical.

@DisposableInterloper: Why? I have shortcuts. The problem I have is the inaccuracy of trackpads, sure you can pinch and twist and whatever, but so can I, with the same speed and probably double the precision.
