Abandoned Russian Military Base Filled with Rusty, Violent Ghosts
Posted by Mark Wilson at 5:00 AM on September 25, 2008
Built in 1946 to protect Russia's northern coastline, this base near Murmansk city was abandoned semi-intact, its once deadly weapons rusting in the grass like an old Chevy. The full gallery is strangely haunting, a post-industrial rendition of the Anasazi—here one day, gone another. [EnglishRussia via MAKE]

Read "The World Without Us." This scene reminds me of that book.

Us being the USA. On the web, sometimes I forget about the world wide part.

@AlexTheSane: Didn't DaVinci say something about how the sculpture is in the rock, he just had to remove the parts that didn't belong. Maybe that's how Russia got it's fleet. Either that or the Federation was attempting to develop a phasing cloak in violation of the treaty with the Romulans.

Damn, hit submit to early. I'm guessing they left everything out like that as part of a treaty. I know the US has to keep planes out in the open in the desert and slowly dismantle them so that the satellites can take pictures of the process. I think that the ICBM sites have to have one silo door removed, and the other slid open to show it's be decommissioned.

Tarkovsky's Stalker is set against this type of backdrop. Super low-budget philosophical sci-fi with great visuals.

Reminds me of how one of the YF-23s, once one of the most advanced aircraft flying, was stuck out on a corner of a parking area at Edward AFB and just sat there for a few years with no attention at all after the F-22 was selected.

Well there's your problem. W/o the barrel, the artillery isn't as effective.

I like, but it is amazing how easily stuff like this gets forgotten after it is all said and done. They even had that memorial, it looked very shoddy and could use some attention.

@UrIt: Agreed. Steampunk's got nothing on this.
As for violent ghosts, I believe that's called tetanus.

@Satorical: Get out of here Stalker.
It's amazing how both the game and the film capture the creepiness of the environment and yet still make it beautiful, just like it really is.

The ship front is pretty cool. Good to know the Russian teleportation program never got any further. The story about the guy who lost his butt because it ended up in the rock when the ship teleported in was pretty tragic. At least he survived though. 137 sailors lost when all they had tried to do is teleport the ship 50 meters to the left.

slightly reminds me of Pointe du Hoc when I was there over the summer...only this place doesn't have the MASSIVE craters and still has the guns in place. Very cool. Just imagine a paintball game there!

There's actually a lot of bunkers and gun batteries stuff like this dotting the coast in San Francisco as well. Fort Funston in the SW corner has some pretty big concrete fortifications creeping out of the dunes and cliffs that look like old Dharma initiative setups. The guns are gone but you can still find shell casings and random equipment.

Why do some of the cannons have the barrels cut off? Some of the barrels are still in place while others were just cut off what gives? Were they sold for scrap or something?
