You Actually Have to Own iPhone Apps to Slam Them Now

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 11:40 PM on September 29, 2008

Unlike their usual tack lately, Apple is doing something at the App Store that actually helps developers. Before, you could review—and slam—any app you wanted willy-nilly, even if you didn't own it. That changed over the weekend—now you have to own an app before you can review it, preventing an onslaught of one-star reviews for Tetris simply because EA is charging eight bucks for it. Now if Apple could apply some of that logic and fairness on their end and stop jerking developers around. [Alley Insider]

Art Lebedev Design for the Rest of Us: Pixelated Mouse-Pointer Fridge Magnets

Posted by John Mahoney at 11:20 PM on September 29, 2008

When they're not designing $US1,500 OLED keyboards or hot WiMax phone concepts, it's good to know the guys over at Art Lebedev Studio like to keep the common folk in mind, sometimes. The common folk who will like to pin up printouts of Gizmodo posts to their fridge with these pixel-art mouse-pointer magnets. They're about 2.5-inches tall and will run you $US4 in the Art Lebedev store. [Art Lebedev via Pocket Lint]

Russian Artists Create Man-Sized, Melted, Working iPod

Posted by John Herrman at 11:00 PM on September 29, 2008

The 'WowPod' might not the be first oversized, semi-functioning iPod, but it's probably the strangest. Perhaps taking cues from Salvador Dali (The Persistence of Flash Memory? Anyone? Sorry?), Aristarkh Chernyshev and Alexei Shulgi have not just blown up and distorted an iPod — they've thrown in some functionality. Their site is low on details, but from the looks of it they may actually have the display connected to a iPod Classic's video output. The rest is up to speculation: are the controls mapped? Are the earbuds speakers? What does it mean? What is art? Who am I? and so on. [XLGallery via Make]

iPhone Heart Monitor Tracks Your Heartbeat Unless You Are Dead

Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:20 PM on September 29, 2008

Here's a really cool application for the iPhone: Heart Monitor uses the iPhone microphone--especially the one built into your headphones--to record and track your heartbeat from your chest, wrist or neck. Watching the video, it looks like it will be a perfect application for both sports people and hypochondriacs, even while it comes with a couple of disclaimers:

BREAKING: Tamagotchi Still Exists, Has Evolved Colour

Posted by John Herrman at 9:20 PM on September 29, 2008

Undoubtedly reopening the emotional wounds of millions of bereaved Millennials across the world, Tamagotchi has come back from the dead (they always do!) with a familiar line of life support simulators. This time, though, they come in colour, presumably to make the short, hungry, futile lives of those unfortunate little mutants that much more real to impressionable children. It remains to be seen if, 12 years later, today's young children, many of whom already (and inexplicably) have a mobile phone and/or iPod, will take to the 'Gotch. Japan only for now, but if and when they arrive in the US expect a price of around $US50. Enjoy some exciting, action-packed screenshots after the jump. [UberGizmo via Inventorspot]

Motorola Building a Huge Development Team for Android, With 350 Humanoids

Posted by John Herrman at 9:00 PM on September 29, 2008

TechCrunch is reporting that Motorola is getting pretty serious about Android, with immediate plans to expand their dedicated project team from 50 to 350. If true, this could mark a turning point for Motorola, whose phones have been seeming less and less competitive every day. While putting more than a few eggs in Android's basket might not be advisable quite yet, our own succinct Brian Lam put it best: "Motorola hardware plus Android OS = WANT" (This is how he always talks, by the way). In case you were wondering what exactly that unfamiliar sound was, Motorola, I'll tell you. That was the sound of unbridled enthusiasm for one of your potential phones, AFTER 2004. Did you enjoy it? Then keep hiring. [TechCrunch]

Sprint XOHM WiMax Quietly Goes Live In Baltimore

Posted by John Herrman at 7:40 PM on September 29, 2008

Just over a week ago the word was that Baltimore, the first city in a pilot program for the new wireless tech, might not see WiMax until October. With a minimal announcement and little fanfare, though, it looks like the service has gone live in select parts of the city. The pricing options are interesting though already controversial, as there are different fees for unlimited monthly access depending on whether or not that access comes from one or many locations.

Meizu M8 iPhone Clone Hitting China, India In December

Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:04 PM on September 29, 2008

Meizu's iPhone copycatting M8 mobile phone is to be vaporware no longer thanks to GeekITstores, who will be launching it in China then India from December onwards. The 8GB model is apparently due to cost somewhere between $US380 and $US470, and will be launched with "complete fanfare"...presumably because it's the "iPhone killer," or so says the press release. In fact, GeekITStores really seem to love the device, saying it was looking for a "better, cheaper alternative" to the iPhone for Indian customers. Read on for the press release.

Foxtel Changing Their Pricing Structure From November 1

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 2:00 PM on September 29, 2008

Insitu Tight Foxtel HD.jpgFoxtel subscribers are going to find their bills adjusted slightly just before Christmas as the Pay TV operator is changing its pricing structure. For most people this will probably mean you'll be paying a little bit more, for some people it will actually mean they get their Foxtel cheaper.

The basic package price will go up from $37.95 to $40, but the monthly subscription cost for iQ owners will come down from $14.95 to $10. A lot of plans will round up an extra five cents (like My Showtime, which goes from $15.95 to $16, yet My Sport goes down from $17.95 to $16.

On Demand Movies will also get a price drop, from $5.95 to $5.50 for standard movies and $6.95 to $6 for HD movies.

All in all, it probably won't make too much of a difference to your bottom line each month, although the rounded figures will make it easier for most people to know what they're spending.

Solenoid Steel Band Makes Me Want to Go to Brazil and Dance

Posted by Jesus Diaz at 1:33 PM on September 29, 2008

A music aficionado/engineering genius has created this wonderful musical piece using just electromagnetic solenoids--devices that convert electricity into linear motion--placed next to different objects around the office, and a computer control program. The result is so good that it makes me want to drink caipirinhas, dance samba, or move to Rio do Janeiro. But since I just moved to New York and it's 11:30PM already, I will just do myself a caipirinha and watch the episode 1 season 2 of Californication.

A Sneak Peek at the New TiVo User Interface

TiVo is apparently focus testing a new, more modern user interface that puts content—and ads—front and centre. Besides finally adding Picture-in-Guide so you can keep watching a show while chugging through the guide, the main menu is now lined with a row of pictures along the top. The thumbnails are a combo of recently watched, favourites and suggestions—as well as ads. More details and videos of the new UI in action are below, courtesy of Dave Zatz.

Amazing Macro Photography Makes the Tiny Big, Beautiful

Posted by Jack Loftus at 11:00 AM on September 29, 2008

Here's a cool collection from a Wired contest that details some of the best macro photography we've seen in at least the past couple days. The bad boy above is a jumping spider sitting on a DVD. Photographer "Coder" captured the image with a Canon 20D using a Canon MP-E macro lens. Below you'll find water from a fountain that took the shape of a head, and a wet leaf. Yes, a leaf. Normally that'd be pretty boring, but captured with that little flower icon set to 'on,' it becomes a scene from another world.

Long story short is they're armed to the teeth with tech, Apple products and web apps, and their classrooms are too. As a Mac user who led an isolated PC-free existence during his college career, I take some solace in the survey's key takeaways:

A Rockin' Rocking Horse For Mini-Bikers

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 9:15 AM on September 29, 2008

If you're the type of father who was listening to Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild at the birth of your firstborn, have unleaded petrol for blood and love nothing more than the vibrant throb of your Harley Davidson between your legs, chances are you're going to prefer your child get into slightly more manly activities than riding a rocking horse.

That's where the Kidcraft Roaring Softail Rocker comes into play. For $US180, it will let your child enjoy the soothing fun of a rocking horse in a totally kickass design. And while it won't give your child the same thundering vibration as your Harley, if it did it would probably have a whole different target demographic.

Better Than Hypospray: Japanese Inventor Creates Needle-Free, Painless Injection

Posted by Jack Loftus at 9:00 AM on September 29, 2008

Most of our childhoods have already been ruined by needles at the doctor's office, but one Japanese inventor thinks he's come up with the perfect pain-free, needle-free injection to sooth tomorrow's lucky kids. Called Mother's Kiss, the device would theoretically eliminate the need for needles and even existing needle-free devices, which use gas or air pressure to deliver drugs (think primitive Dr. Crusher). Instead, the seemingly simple device uses tiny plastic ampules to deliver life saving meds to the needle-averse. National Geographic has a video, but it doesn't embed, so check the link for more on inventor Yoshoi Oyama and Mother's Kiss. [National Geographic]

Japanese Beauty Products Use Brute Force to Make You Fabulous

If you think parts of your face are out of proportion, like some Japanese people apparently do, there are tools available today that can help correct your ugliness. No, not plastic surgery. Too messy. Too obvious. I'm talking about tools like Kogao Meiku Beruto (small face make belt), which wrap your misshapen melon in gentle fabric, and bind those unsightly bulges and that caveman forehead into oblivion. The Tex Mex men's mouth narrower, on the other hand, is straight out of a Saw movie.

BlizzCon 2008 Showing On Pay-Per-View

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 8:23 AM on September 29, 2008

I've generally found that the only people who get to enjoy pay-per-view entertainment on Foxtel (or Austar and Optus) are those who like watching grown men fight with eachother (boxing) or pretend to fight with eachother (professional wrestling). Now a third group of people are being catered for: the gaming geek.

Main Event is broadcasting Blizzard's annual conference, BlizzCon 2008 over two days in October. And while I personally can't justify $30 over two days to watch stuff I can read on Kotaku, I'm sure there's plenty of you guys who will thoroughly enjoy the experience. Plus, if you buy both days, you get some weird polar bear thing (WOW isn't my thing, I'm afraid).

So the question needs to be asked: how many of you guys are thinking about buying this? Even if it's just for the cosplay?

Here's a Peak at Sony Ericsson's Biodegradable GreenHeart Concept Phone

Posted by Jack Loftus at 8:00 AM on September 29, 2008

Ever get so pissed at your mobile phone that you just want to chuck it into the trash? If Sony Ericsson's GreenHeart phone ever sees the light of day, you'll be able to do it, and nature will take care of the rest. For now, the phone is a concept (aren't they always?), but the designers are hoping to inspire other manufacturers with its environmentally-friendly feature set. Since you're asking, that entails bio-plastic, recycled plastic, HTML docs instead of printed ones, and a zero charger with 3.5mW of standby power. It ain't too sexy, sure, but this puppy decomposes with the best of them. [Mobile Cowboys via Boy Genius Report]

Thrustmaster's Glowing Lightsaber Wiimote Add-on Might Make Force Unleashed Bearable

Bonus shot for awkward Canadian teens after the jump. [Thrustmaster via Go Nintendo]

Apple Patent Filing Hints at Distance-Based Bluetooth Pairing

Posted by Jack Loftus at 6:30 AM on September 29, 2008

Like two dogs meeting for the first time, it may soon be the case that Apple wireless devices need only have catch a whiff of each others' rear ends before they know everything they need to know about the other. All joking aside, Apple really did file a pair of patents recently that would let users pair wireless devices simply by bringing them together. A second patent would allow users to fill in missing address book data simply by making a request through e-mail.
