24-Ct Gold iPod Nano is a Violent Mugging Waiting to Happen
Posted by Jack Loftus at 3:00 AM on September 29, 2008
Quick question: How do you make one of the world's most stolen gadgets, well, more enticing? If we're talking about iPods, which we are, then you slap 24ct and 18ct white gold all over the newest models, and then send them out into the subways inside the pockets of the today's filthy rich. Of course, for a mere $US644 for the Nano and $US823 for the Touch, you too can slap this cutpurse bling beacon to your side and hope for the best. Good luck, and we hope the pickpockets of your community enjoy the playlist you've selected for them. [Goldstriker via Born Rich]

Brilliantly well said. I got a kick out of it, but I don't think they will like my Brutal Technical Death Metal playlist.

I know this sound silly - but how do they actually do this? Do they actually remake the back and the chrome parts with the exact same, identical markings?

Well I just ordered the ipod touch. Why? because apparently, on the site it says it's 0 pounds, so free? IDK, let's hope they actually didn't just charge my credit card for $823, or else I'll cancel right now.

I wonder if they do this with regular iPods as well.

@Vivara:
I believe it's a electro plating process. From the looks of the product photos, it look like they first polish the back and in case of stainless steel like the iPod touch, first go through a copper strike which adheres well to steel and then nickel on top of that to stop the oxidation of copper to come through and finally the finishing plating.

I just hope that whatever crazy rich fool buys them doesn't scratch them up like the normal iPods

Great, a lottery for muggers: "any one of earbuds could be attached to a bar of GOLD!"

That's K, not Ct.
Ct is for gemstones.

Aw man, do you have any idea how soft 24 karat gold is? Scratches galore, unless of course, you want to cover it up, which of course defeats the whole purpose of this...stupid thing.

If this keeps up, people are going to have to start taking out insurance policies on their iPods.

Remember the guy that got attacked on the bus a while back? Yeah... And his iPhone/ipod Touch wasn't even gold-plated.

I'm going to start selling iPod cases out of moss, so all the 'green' folks can feel better about themselves.
