Posted by John Mahoney at 12:30 AM on August 5, 2008
The Zeemote analogue joystick controller for Bluetooth phones is now starting to see the light of day, at least for lucky Dutch W760 buyers, who will get it free as a promo package. This isn't the Wii-like motion-control version the company has been promising, and still no word on U.S. pricing or availability, but it looks like your first person mobile phone shooters will soon get a bit easier to play. Full release follows.

It looks like the demonic child of a Wii nunchuck and a Norelco shaver. WTF?

I got the chance to check it out during the GDC. Good idea, but the design is horrible; its too small and cramped, so after just a few minutes, your hand begins to hurt. Button placement is also piss-poor.

It doesn't seem practical. You have games on the phone, then a controller bigger than the phone? The only time I play games on my phone is when I'm taking a shit. I can't see dragging this thing out in the can. It doesn't make sense to me.

It's an ugly design, and it has a stupid name. Mintendo Wu, anyone?
I mean, on the one hand, they're basically admitting they're copying Nintendo. On the other hand, nobody is ever going to buy this thing.
I don't mean to be so negative, it's just that some decisions leave me short of a rational explanation. Think of all the plastic and other resources (electricity at the factories, oil for the shipping, etc...) that get wasted on a stupid idea like this! NYAGH!

@Hectorvex:
For me I want fewer things in my pocket. Adding a controller for my cell phone games seems idiotic.
What's next, an adapter to connect the SixAxis to the PSP?

I had some hands on with this device at last year's GDC and I was mostly unimpressed. It only worked on games designed specifically to be compatible with it AND it doesn't use a standard bluetooth HID profile which means it is limited to working with cellphones that directly support it and cannot be used as general pointing device with other bluetooth equipment like laptops or internet tablets.

Up Down Left Right Button Button....seriously, what can this do that a phone already can't do?

Seriously? Why the hell would anyone want this? Maybe this is just the precursor of things to come, but I have an iPhone and it's great all the things it can do but I have no intention of playing any kind of involved game on it that would require a wireless controller. That is why I have a PS3. Come on Ericsson, just make a phone that isn't a POS.
