Winglet Personal Transport to Keep Increasing J-Lo's Arse Size
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:03 PM on August 1, 2008
The Winglet is Toyota's Segway killer--as if there was anything left to kill--a personal transport assistant that comes in three different models, all destined to fail in the US to the lack of sidewalk vehicle regulations and cheeseburger/cup holders. The three models--Type S, M, and L--look great, especially the small one, with no handlebar at all.

Tokyo -- TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today development of the "Winglet", a personal transport assistance robot ridden in a standing position.
The Winglet--still being refined--is one of TMC's people-assisting Toyota Partner Robots. Designed to contribute to society by helping people enjoy a safe and fully mobile life, the Winglet is a compact next-generation everyday transport tool that offers advanced ease of use and expands the user's range of mobility.
The Winglet consists of a body (with a projected area the size of an A3 sheet of paper) that houses an electric motor, two wheels and internal sensors that constantly monitor the user's position and make adjustments in power to ensure stability. Meanwhile, a unique parallel link mechanism allows the rider to go forward, backward and turn simply by shifting body weight, making the vehicle safe and useful even in tight spaces or crowded environments.
TMC has created three models, the "L", "M" and "S", each having different handling features that allow consumers to select a model appropriate to their needs--from "practical" to "hands-free sporty".
TMC plans various technical and consumer trials to gain feedback during the Winglet's lead-up to practical use. Practical tests of its utility as a mobility tool are planned to begin in Autumn 2008 at Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) near Nagoya, and Laguna Gamagori, a seaside marine resort complex in Aichi Prefecture. Testing of its usefulness in crowded and other conditions, and how non-users react to the device, is to be carried out in 2009 at the Tressa Yokohama shopping complex in Yokohama City.
TMC is pursuing sustainability in research and development, manufacturing and social contribution as part of its concept to realise "sustainability in three areas" and to help contribute to the health and comfort of future society. Toyota Partner Robot development is being carried out with this in mind and applies TMC's approach to monozukuri ("making things"), which includes its mobility, production and other technologies. In a related development, TMC unveiled the "MOBIRO" mobility robot, designed for use in a sitting position, in 2007.
TMC aims to realise the practical use of Toyota Partner Robots in the early 2010s by furthering its robotic development and strengthening collaboration between industry, government and academia.

I have a different "Personal Transport" that easily sustains 3 mph with potential for considerable higher speeds, no recharge needed, custom built, cofortable, stylish and durable for many years. No intial investment and no additional hardware required.
Its called "Get off your lazy ass and walk".

It seems none of you realize that the Segway being used in law enforcement, EMT/Paramedic and Hazmat has made major inroads. The StreetSmart version of the Segway is selling extremely well.
It must be that those that attack the Segway are ill and ill informed.
Be a free thinker and open your mind and stop attacking a very usable device.

@Maksimir: Well, considering that the Segway goes more than 4 times as fast, I can't imagine that the poor Winglet team will do very well...

OK, so whether you like the Segway or not, this is just stupid. First off, it never sold, so why do you make something to compete with it that does basically the same thing, but worse?
The Segway has a top speed of about 12 mph. All three of these have a "maximum cruising speed" of 6 kp/h, which is just over 3.7 mph. You may look like an idiot on a Segway, but at least you go faster than walking...
And people complain that the Segway is too hard to ride (I don't know what they're talking about; Segways are easier to ride than driving a car). How in the world do you ride the one with no handlebars? I would be afraid of dying... Well, that would be the case if I could even go 4 mph!
Of course, the Segway also costs $5000, which I do not have...

It has flames molded into the tires. Flames make things go faster. This could probably catch a drunk traveling at 40mph.

@Curves: This highlights the problem with all of these devices for moving the lazy long distances. The lazy don't want to move long distances, even if you're carrying us. We want to stay in one place. Reason #1 we don't get up and walk somewhere? Nope, not because we don't want to walk. Because we'd rather stay where we are thank you very much!
This is in direct opposition to improving exoskeleton and wheelchair technology which provides ways for people who do want to go somewhere with the ability to get there.

I want one with a chair (I can only walk about a block at once). I want the Ibot really, but that costs the same as a new car.
Why keep making these standing things? If you can stand for prolonged periods of time unasisted (device leans so you cant put weight on the handles) then you can damn well WALK.
I want a sit-down leany-zoomy thing.

@Curves: Yes yes yes, we all know that 'mericans are fat and lazy and should walk more. Hackneyed comment, really. But before y'all condemn a device, think a little about what it might be useful for. Like for instance as a sort of skateboard for those who aren't as able, like the old(er) and infirm. Japan's population is aging fast, which is why we see all these robotic assistance devices from there. In Japan's cities, where transportation is more focused on walking and public transportation, a small device like this might make a lot of sense for that segment of the population that isn't able to walk as well as the able bodied.

@weatherman: I am not talking in any way about someone with mobility restrictions. Thats the only reason I would hope these exist. My point is where does it end? Do we need a machine to open and close our jaws so we can chew? An iron lung to breathe for us? Something to go to the bathroom for us? A machine to have sex for us? (Ok, so maybe that one is needed.) I realize its a rhetorical question, but its gone from necessity to nuts, imho.

@Curves: I just think that we've gotten to this point of ridiculing anything that is perceived as being "lazy" when in fact there's real utility and (more importantly) fun to be had with something like this. After all, nobody ridicules the bicycle as being a device for lazy people, when in fact it really is. This is just like a bicycle in my mind, but without the hassle of taking up so much space and requiring the rider to wear special clothing or break a sweat. Which may sound more lazy than a bike, but when you're talking about transportation around a city wearing a suit in 90' heat, this seems like a much better option.
I live in NYC right now, and I walk about 3 blocks to get to the subway, and about 2 blocks to get from the subway to work. Obviously I don't need this. But when I lived on the Upper West side and worked in midtown, I would have much rather ridden something like this through Central Park most of the year rather than cramming myself in multiple crowded trains to get to work. Yes, 6kph is a little on the slow side, but the video of it moving at a fast-walk puts that in perspective.
If this is reasonably priced, I could see this being a great thing to have for a lot of city folk who can't ride a bike to work and who might not be ideally served (or might just prefer not to use) public transportation. It's green and fun - what's not to like?

ok i already commented on the OTHER winglet post w/o reading the specs.
the specs suck. IF they could match or best the segway specs they'd still be competing in a pretty unsuccessful market.
whats impressive here is the weight - segways come in at around 80 pounds, about 3 times what this is. however the segway goes faster (which isnt all that fast at all to begin with) and has a much needed longer range (how many beer runs can you do in a measly 5-10 km?)

weatherman
Posted 3:44 AM 2/8/08
@nutbastard: you're forgetting that it's hands-free operations, so don't think of it as "how many beer runs" think of it as "how many beers can you drink while riding this?"
10 kilometers at 6 k/h = 1.7 hours of drive time. 1 beer every 10 minutes = 10 beers. Not bad!

I think the reason the Segway hasn't gotten general market penetration is that it is just too expensive for what it provides. The reason police departments buy them is that there are various pork barrel funds out there, especially since 9/11. Many of the funds go to P.D.s where the congressman has an influential vote, NOT where there is a terrorist threat.
If I could get a Segway for under $1000 AND there was a way to carry groceries, e.g. a trailer, I would be waiting in line.

@Skeptical_Geezer: There's a Segway that can carry a golf bag; that should be able to carry groceries with a bit of work. Of course that Segway is $7400, so there's no rush to get in line just yet. (And for $7400, you really shouldn't have to mod the thing yourself.)

It's worth noting that while Segway hasn't become ubiquitous as some though, it's still alive and steadily growing. Additionally, the performance numbers don't look all that great compared to any of the Segway numbers (with the possible exception of the charge time). 6km/hr and a range of 5 and 10 km? Segways are topping out at 20km/hr and a range of as much as 38km. Ether way, it will be very interesting to see how Toyota has gotten around the patents... Segway and DEKA (of which Segway was spun off of) will ferociously protect their intellectual property.
