What the Wiimote Needs Now: More LEDs
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:02 AM on August 15, 2008
Now that Nintendo's solving their Wiimote control issues, we can finally focus our intentions on superficial improvements. It's required some major soldering, but one modder has added all sorts of LED-based tweaks to his Wiimote. The first, seen here, Skittles-izes the player indicators by swapping out the now-drab blue LEDs for those of multiple colours. Our cup of tea? Not really. But the kids will love it. The second notable mod utilises the Wiimote's rumble signal and maps an LED pulse to the shaking:
For those interested in actually doing this stuff to your Wiimotes, head over to Wiimotemods for their complete guide of step-by-step projects. [Wiimotemods via MAKE]

If you take a look at the project you'll see that it's one hell of a lot more than just "soldering".
It's some clean precise work for sure.
Makes me want to work on my surface mount skilz too.
Those SMD LEDs are extremely useful!

I don't know about the light in the mic that flashes with the vibration, but the colored LEDs for which player you are is kind of neat. I always thought just blue was kind of bland. It may not be Mark's cup 'o tea, but I approve :c)

I kinda think Nintendo should have done this from the start, just to reinforce the colour to player # concept.
I'd do this if I could solder.

How long before someone manages to hide a functional stun gun in a Wiimote?

This would cost Ninty more than a DVD license to implement so I don't think they want to 'slash' their profit margins.

@crayonwaxy: We thank you all-mighty BanHammer for the gift you have given us.
And, I don't want a mod that serves no purpose beside giving my little sister more reason to fling the WiiMote around the room. I want to see the MotionPlus added in without changing the outside (I don't know how easy that is since I never looked inside the remote). Then, still allow the nunchuck to be plugged in and cook up some godly amazing homebrew after making an easy way for updated Wiis to have custom firmware installed.

This has been around for a couple of months. I've got 2 wiimotes modded this way and would like to do the third. It's really cool when you can write code for GlovePIE to make it go back and forth between the colored LEDs for when you activate star power in GH3 for PC.
