Walking Stick With Suspension, Flashlight and Flashing Signal is Perfect for Supergran
Posted by Kit Eaton at 10:44 PM on August 18, 2008
Were I an old geezer right now, my gadget-cravings would no doubt include this multifunction walking stick. It's adjustable, has in-built suspension, an LED flashlight, flashing signals and an alarm and is one bad-arse walking assistance device. Ok, so it's probably designed mainly for hikers and other outdoorsy-types, but if your grandma or grandpa is into gadgets and has walking troubles, then I can imagine they'd love this. Available now for US$31. [Gadget4All via 7Gadgets]

Does it bother anyone else that it looks kind of like a hammer. I don't think the old folks need that kind of encouragement.

Nothin' like a nice high-quality beat-down stick.

@Git Em SteveDave displays attention-grabbing vanity: that's not an ice axe, that's for beating whippersnappers!

somehow i don't think that suspension on a walking stick or "Multi-function Crutch" as it is described on the product page, is a good idea. if i am not mistaken the point of the device is to take pressure off your leg/foot so you can motor about more easily.

@Ben Zvan: As long as it doesn't look like a banhammer.

If only it also contained a hidden sword. That'd be something!

@godwhacker: If used as a walking stick, then suspension is a good thing. I don't know the mechanics of it, but I have used both a plain stick and a hiking pole, and there is a difference.

mebbe if you were hiking, and kind of stabbing terrain for balance? the suspension might be good then.

@Git Em SteveDave displays attention-grabbing vanity: A banhammer, properly applied to young whippersnappers may not be such a bad thing.

@godwhacker: Having used both a hiking staff and a cane, I can tell you that a little give in the cane would not be a bad thing. It takes a bit of pressure off the hand that holds it.

My father is too proud to use a walking stick, but I wonder if he'd be into this one.
