Volkswagen Caddy Van Features a Wooden Boat Deck For Sunbathing
Posted by Sean Fallon at 10:00 AM on August 29, 2008
The designers at Volkswagen brought out the big guns for an upcoming recreational vehicle show in Düsseldorf, Germany by crossing one of their small commercial Caddy vans with a sailboat. While the Caddy Topos Sail design is not capable of travelling on water, it does feature a sailboat style deck on the roof that can be modified for relaxation and sunbathing. It even features a wooden ladder built into the glass to grant easy access to the roof. I suppose that it is clever in a stupid sort of way, but no matter how you feel about the quirky design, it is only a concept.

Imagine sex on the roof of a car... it could be true with this vehicle. also very functional guest room for those who live in cars.

They should make faux wood solar panels.

If you wanna kill your wife this would be perfect.
Pretend you wanna go to the lake and sunbathe on top of the car and relax.
Pretend you forgot something, go back in the car put it in neutral and push that fucker right in.
HONESTLY OFFICER WE WERE UP HERE AND THE CAR ROLLED IN!

This would be pretty sweet with a couple of quick modifications.
I'd lower the height first, and then get rid of the back seats, lowering the deck down further, almost like an El Camino. Then probably move the engine from the front of the car to the very back. Probably remove the wheels and undercarriage completely and replace it with a solid water-proof bottom. I'd take off the front roof, giving it more of a "convertible" feel. Last, I'd put some kind of rudder behind the engine that I'd connect somehow to the steering wheel. Oh, and I'd throw a cooler of beer and a couple of fishing rods in.
There are probably a few extra details, but that's the general idea.

Conundrum: I could get laid on it, but I would never get laid because I was driving it.

It's an interesting concept, to be sure, but I can't see this becoming a serious product.
@CEOself:
She's reclining.

Put a plug near the roof to keep my laptop powered, a couple of weather-proof flush-mount speakers, and this is a win!

@CEOself: In the product page universe, this isn't the case unless it's selling Calvin Klein clothing.

@oneclick: Having sex on wood, that is on top of a car? EHH no thanks. I could see a lot of people losing balance. Plus my knees would hurt like all hell.

You may sunbath on that recliner, but the subject of the photo is clearly just reclining. Is it really that hard to add 2 and 2 together?

Besides being a ridiculously hideous automobile its a nice concept. Maybe more suitable as a customization.

Did they come up with this design so that in case you accidentally overshoot the parking lot at the beach by several hundred feet, you can still enjoy yourself?

I feel like they should design something that's detachable? Almost like a car accessory. This would be awesome for fishing or roadtrips.

@danson: It's incredibly cool. Have you ever laid on the hood of your car and it just slopes down too much, or your legs dangle off the end too much or some other stupid stuff that makes it not comfortable?
This thing is on your flat roof, with a pop-up headboard thing, heck yeah it's awesome. The car itself is hideous, but will probably sell as well as that freaking box, the old Scion xB.

That is Stupid! And has too many cons than pros. 1. The roof will be overheated and hot like a grill - you can even get burnings on the skin 2. It will be dirty and greasy as hell - before sitting on it - you must wash it very carefully or you'll be like hobo
