Video Hands-on: Samsung X360 Is MacBook Air Killer
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 12:20 AM on August 30, 2008
I got my dirty paws all over the 1.26kg Samsung X360 and I've got to say I'm impressed with everything except for the piano black finish. Its size and weight--very light and thin--is comparable to the MacBook Air, the 13.3-inch,1,200 x 800 pixel screen looks very good, and it comes with more ports and features than Apple's notebook: direct HDMI out, three USB ports, Express Card slot, 7-in-1 flash card reader, external optical unit included, and fingerprint reader for security. Definitely, the Samsung X360 bests the MacBook Air in features hands down... although yes, you guessed it, there's a big hairy but lurking around the corner.
It can't run Mac OS X. And to me, that's the killer. For Windows users, however, the Samsung X360 looks like the best machine of both. Granted, Apple fanboys will argue that a revision of the MacBook Air is just around the corner, but at this point and on the surface--and without knowing the final US price, which we guess will be comparable to the MacBook Air as well--, the winner is the Samsung X360.
The Good: Ultra-thin, ultra-light, great quality, and good number of features, including expandability via Express Card and direct access to HDMI and flash cards (I can kill for this one). No compromises except the optical unit, which I can live without, like many other people, I suspect. The keyboard was comfortable, chiclet-style.
The Bad: The damn piano black finish. As a personal note, the fact that it can't run Mac OS X (without modification) is the main drawback for me, as I think it's what makes the MacBook the best notebooks in the market. However, this last "bad" won't be bad at all for the largest part of the market, though.
Bottom line: If Samsung can nail the price of this unit at the US$1,800 mark, they definitely have a best seller in their hands. However, we will have to wait and see Apple's new MacBook Air, who obviously has a long lead in this category at this point. [More IFA 2008 Coverage]

@snitch29: Oh, and i assume you did a fresh install of Vista on your MacBook (if you even did). Did you also do the same for the HP?
Why don't you try transferring an image of your HP machine OS install to your MacBook then come back and tell me how much faster it is.
Apple PC's are not magical. To believe they are is delusional.

nice little lappy. Better make sure you have a cleaning cloth handy.
I believe he says HE wouldn't buy because it doesn't run OSX. Why does everyone have a problem with that? If you saw a gorgeous laptop with great features, but it only runs Amiga OS (whatever that was), wouldn't you also say "the problem is it doesn't run ___OS"?

Great looking machine with nice large screen, but why do laptop makers keep putting the USB ports on the right side??? That means when something is plugged in (thumb drive), it's right in the way of a right-hander's (external) mousing area.

@snitch29: Are we still believing that myth? If both machines have the same hardware, they run the same software identically (given the install conditions). There's no magic in an OSX machine, except the magic any other company can acquire, like Intel CPU's and Nvidia/ATI/Intel graphics. Stop with these outright lies.

The fact that it doesn't run OSX doesn't matter. If you do a comparison of two pieces of hardware, then compare the hardware. If you want to compare operating systems, then compare them.
Frankly, my linux OS kicks the living crap out of your limiting and limited OSX for what I want to do with my computer. The only thing I care about is which hardware works best, and including the OS in the review skews that information.
Sure it's a sticky situation since you can't put OSX on other computers (without tweaking and possibly breaking the law) and some people thing it's a beneficial addition, but if you have to sacrifice hardware quality in order to get OSX, that's a fault of Apple's, not of Samsung's.
A simple way to put it would be that Samsung's machine does what it was designed to do better than Apple's does. So the question is what do you want your machine to do.

Pretty sure Samsung doesn't export their laptops to the USA, so if chubby Americans want one, they'll likely have to buy through an importer and I seriously doubt it'll be anywhere near $1800 (in a bad way).

I didn't even know the the MB Air need to be killed. Doesn't the term "??? killer" mean to knock off something very popular. Mac users in general only represent a very small portion of computer users and only a very small portion of those have an Air so why "kill" something that has very, very, small base.

I also do know for a fact that you could throw 512MB on a OS X machine and it will still runs faster than a windows machine, why??? i don't know why.

That's not what I said. I said that my linux distro kicks OSX ass for WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH MY COMPUTER. More stability, more flexibility, more customizability, better use of hardware resources, universal across ANY hardware by ANY maker, faster improvement cycles, better bug correction, and the fastest user interface going. The fact that it is also free is just a bonus.

As in it's not made by Apple. And for most of the people out there, based on the marketshare at least, that's probably a good thing.
And would you REALLY want to run Windows on an Air?? Maybe if you boot up into it every time, but putting it on Parallels or VMWare Fusion would be retarded with one 1 gig of free RAM per OS.

Can we declare a moratorium on the "[Apple product]-killer" trope already? Apple's products live or die on their own merits or shortcomings, not because someone came out with a similar product with a few bells and whistles attached. (Microsoft beat them with an inferior product, but that's different.) If Steve Jobs were in better health, he could walk from Cupertino to San Francisco on a pathway made from the gravestones of "Apple killer" companies.

@11010010: Reviews...unlike user comments...are ideally supposed to be free of biased opinion. I'd say listing the fact that a laptop comes with Vista instead of OSX as a "Bad" thing or a "bug hairy but" is a) silly, given the vastly larger popularity of windows and b) biased.
About your other point:
OSX can run Vista because Windows was developed with a focus on being able to run on millions of potential hardware combinations or configurations.
OSX was designed to run on Macs...that's about it.
It isn't Microsoft's fault that getting OSX to recognize and work well with your setup is such a pain in the ass.
You might say it "just works" because it just works with whatever they want it to.

I think we can just skip "doesn't run OSX" as a drawback of Windows laptops. I mean, come on.
What would you think if you read a review of a new Apple laptop and the author listed "doesn't run Windows natively" as a drawback?
Also, let's establish some difference between "competitor" and "killer," shall we? Very few products so completely crush the established leader that they can be called "killers." Not every product that is brought out to compete in a certain niche needs to be touted as a "killer" of the established leader there. Even if it's a pretty good offering.
Classic hilarious misuse of the word killer: "Google Checkout = Paypal Killer."
Yeah, that really panned out.

The thing that always amazes me is how Apple comes out with these relatively GIANT trackpads, which are an absolute pleasure to use, while their competitors do the exact opposite and use nasty features like a side strip for scrolling and cheap mouse buttons. Cannot another major notebook manufacturer implement a large, gesture-capable trackpad for their device?
Everyone's already copied the Macbook chiclet keyboard (which Sony invented, then mostly abandoned, and now is totally back on the bandwagon). Is it only a matter of time before they imitate other design aesthetics and features from the Macbook line?
I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy, but everyone in the notebook space is trying to replicate Apple's recent success in the market. This invariably leads to similar products...

And @all_you_Mac_haters: Why are you people forever misspelling shit? Don't y'all have system-wide spell checking?....wait...no...
In closing, all of you that hate Apple because your parents didn't raise you properly can do one of two things:
1) STFU
or
2) DIE IN A FIRE

@mstolfe: Nope. Windows would be the hang up on this notebook.
@Noobs-R-Us: ? @Ginsu: lolololol, but chill out.@Roams: Better than confusing Monster Golf with Monster Cables, anyway.@tech-tard: If only Samsung could stop fucking the shit out of piano black. @Metkis: So shitty is its construction, that I would probably break it were I to accidentally sneeze. @urbanturban666: You seem like you're just looking for a side to belong to, yes man.
And Linux users are elitist douches.

Is it really a problem that it can't run OSX? After all, that's all Apple's doing (and hopefully Psystar will win their countersuit, forcing Apple to allow OSX to run on other hardware).
You're reviewing a piece of hardware, not software. I love Gizmodo for everything except the bias towards Apple. It really makes your reviews absolutely meaningless, especially in this case. Face it, a hardware company made a computer that is a million times better than the MacBook Air.
BTW- I am an Apple user.

You mean they announced a machine that uses the up and coming Montevina, which Apple, Lenovo and VooDoo are going to use when they update their ultra-lightweight machines? So even though three manufactures have head start on this product type Samsung is now " a million times better' because they announced theirs ahead of production? Do you not see how illogical that is?

@Jesus Diaz, Why would you expect a Samsung X360 to run OSX? Do you think apple would allow that?
Your love for Apple anything has been obvious, but it has gotten to a point, where you should just stick to reviewing Apple products. Comparing it to "Apple Leader" and then complaining that it doesn't run OSX is just ridiculous.

When will electronics manufacturers stop giving their gear mirror finishes? That thing was on display and already looked smudged. Imagine after a day's worth of personal use?
Though I guess the more appropriate question would be, when will people stop buying thing 1 instead of thing 2 merely because thing 1 is shinier, thereby ceasing demand for frustratingly shiny things?
There's a reason people pay premiums for matte finishes and brushed metals in almost every other industry selling hands on products.

@extremer:
I sort of agree. I mean, at least in this review he pointed out that it was a personal setback as opposed to a general, but I digress. Simply because it can't run OSX shouldn't be mentioned in the review only because its a windows based product. Some people (myself included - who like products for being great products and not because its Apple or Microsoft) would like to have their products separated by that fact. If I'm in the mood for a Windows based product, give me the skinny, don't tell me it's bad because it can't run OSX, I don't care it can't, and neither should you. You can wait for the next Apple product, but please give me a review based on merrit and not loyalty.

@Jesus Diaz: Where did you get your laptop stand? That would be perfect for my Powerbook. Is it wide enough for a 17" though?

It's amazing how Mac people spin things. It's OS X bad that it refuses to run on the X360, no the other way around. If you keep blaming the wrong company, things won't change. Why don't you man up and call Apple out.

Only problem is that it's a Samsung, and Samsung electronics sucks! I am a previous owner of several cellphones and MP3 players and they all prematurely broke down. I am not about to drop a grand or two on something that will only last a few months.

At first I was excited but then I watched the video,,,
The finish is ridiculous and shows a flaw that most PC design companies still don't get. The designers obviously didn't actually USE this thing before producing it. The sucker is slammed with fingerprints. I assumed the finish would at least be matte on the keyboard deck but no, they screwed it up there as well.
I also expect that if you scratch this thing the scratches will stand out so over time it will start to look like $hit quickly. Thus someone will come out with some plastic cover you have to add to it thereby making it look like a fancy couch with a plastic zip cover on it.
The design also fails as soon as you flip it over. Then it becomes a typical PC with bumps and such; no comparison to Air.
Complaining that it doesn't have OSX is silly. You can kludge it in there if you really want it
Sadly, just as with the Air this one falls short and won't get my $2k. Getting closer though!

@Jesus Diaz: I would not call the inability to run OSX a fault of the product. I'm pretty sure it is able to run if you could, which you can't because a certain someone will not license you to!
If I don't put gas in my car it won't go anywhere but that is me being an idiot expecting it to go anywhere without any gas!
