Verizon Visual Voicemail to Be Free For Supported Phones?
Posted by John Mahoney at 8:30 AM on August 5, 2008
Eagle-eyed spotters recently took note of a few visual voicemail tidbits inadvertently pushed live on Verizon's site (now removed), most notably that the service will potentially be free. The site is down now so this remains in the rumour department (where are the screenshots, guys?), but if true, the reports go against what we all assumed penny-pinching Verizon would do. The only phone model listed on the leaked site was the refreshed Voyager, which jibes with what we've heard previously. [Verizon (dead) via Phone Arena]

Why is this taking so long? Verizon has given us this feature AT HOME for many years now.

It will be a cold day in hell when Verizon gives their customers something for free.

I hope they can make it work on all types of phones... not just touchscreen smart phones.
I don't think it would be much different than having a list of missed calls or your messaging inbox. Just select the message and click play. Then it calls your voicemail and plays that message.

Is that the real screenshot of the visual voicemail interface?

@JEmlay: Because Verizon is finding ways to make you pay for everything, and then they'll resell your soul back to you.

Can't Apple or ATT sue them? Or is this not patented?

i doubt it's patented by at&t. it's probably a third party just like all of the voice recognition software phones use

I'll use it if its free but its not that serious to warrant an extra 2 dollars a month. you might say, "but it's only two dollars a month! you spend that driving 1 mile in your car nowadays" true, but if the iphone and sprint are gicing it away for free, i wont pay simply out of principal. Verizon, you're getting on our last nerves. Your phone UI's generally suck. the only reason i'm still with you is because of the great reception and the fact that all the LG phones i've had to date are built like tanks. (dropped my EnV in water multiple times, dropped my Voyager out of a second story window, every function still works)

I gotta say, Verizon's unified Vcast interface makes me sick.

@Ken_Darrow: Nope. Theres actually no image there. You need to smoke less reefer son. (and pass it to me a little more.) ;)

So, what are the chances that, if this comes to pass... and only the voyager has the option for this, that there will be an app released for WM based phones? Because that would be awesome. And i'd like it. Cause i like awesome things.

@WildWon: There is an image there...?
There already are visual voicemail apps, but they cost money and have an annoying set up process. But if you really are interested, ways exist.

@vgart: Uh, Apple and AT&T infringed the patent. They're being sued and will probably lose. Samsung licensed the patent from the patent holders for Visual Voicemail(forgot their name) so they won't get sued.
If Verizon paid to license it, which they probably did seeing how Apple and AT&T are being sued and are about to get taken down with a bunch of other companies that lost, then no, they won't get sued.

@budboyy2k:
Well, that's not new either. You have to pay for Verizon One service as well. But it was worth it.
It was awesome to have a popup on my machine at work telling me someone was calling my house WITH caller ID. Then having a button to click to have that call forwarded to work.
Pretty impressive features!
