Uncrating the First Surface Table in Australia
Posted by Adam Frucci at 3:00 AM on August 21, 2008
Unlike many gadgets, the Microsoft Surface Table isn't something that a lot of consumers get a chance to unbox for themselves. That doesn't mean you shouldn't get to enjoy seeing some lucky Aussies from the Amnesia Blog pulling the first Surface in the land down under out of its crate. Follow me past the jump for a nice dose of living vicariously through others.
Arriving in 125-kilo crates, the pair of tables were unloaded off a truck before being pried open with a crowbar. Inside, it look like the unboxing of many other gadgets, just a lot bigger. This sucker is huge. I still kind of want one, as impractical as that would be. Maybe someday. [Amnesia Blog]

It's actually a really interesting piece of equipment. I got a chance to play with it the other day. The touch screen was smaller than i expected, and the reaction time with the touch is a bit slow, but it's still a very cool product. I was suprised what you could do with it too in the test games/programs.

I'm drooling too much to argue symantics of "uncrating" and "unboxing"

Microsoft site says 3-5 years for consumer version. Only available to large commercial customers for now.

Somehow, I imagined the final product would be a bit less clunky than the prototypes. Well, at least the concept is still nifty.
I'd love to see someone combine this with a digital wallet system and self-checkout terminals.

@Kaiser-Machead's WALL-E fetish: Oh, and the price I've seen floating about is at or around $10k

@Substance_D: They're mainly supposed to be retail gizmos, so people can go into an electronics store or something like that and the machine is programmed to scan the tags of the items in the store and provide a nifty interactive display.

I don't know why, but when I first saw that picture, I imagined a voice saying "Hey, it fell off the truck, now geddoudahere!"

@stryder100: But what's the likelihood of this cheap knockoff selling for $50 in my local shady electronics store?

Neat. Now somebody make a cheap knock-off. It'd be poetic justice.

See NUI? They are already there. And it's better than Surface. Surface will suck, just like most of MS's other products. Other people will make the tech better, and already are. Hell, you can build your own easy enough for not much money. A hell of a lot less than what this will be even in 3 - 5 years time. By then I think new tech will have come along anyway that will replace this.

Speaking of unboxing, what happened to the Samsung Omnia unboxing post from earlier? Was going to show that to a co-worker, but couldn't find it.

@vgart:
I've dated girls that took longer than 1 second to think about where my finger was...this seems an improvement. ;)

Gadgets...in crates! If unboxing is gadget soft-pr0n then uncrating is hardcore xxx gadget pr0n.
Let's have a vote for all in favor of Jason pantsing a Surface table to bring this gadget orgy to its climax!

I saw one in ATT store. Its cool concept, but its so not responsive to touch. Takes like one second for it to think about where the finger is.

Sadly, the first thought I had was who taught you guys to use a crowbar?? You need to get it between the lid and the box and it'll pop right off without destroying the crate itself. Makes life easier if you want to re-use the crate later. That, and tin-snips would take care of the banding much more effectively than the crowbar.
Sorry, end of rant.
