Tropical Storm Fay from International Space Station Video Camera
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:00 PM on August 20, 2008
The International Space Station was passing at exactly the right time and angle to take this beautiful travelling shot of tropical storm Fay, which is now increasing force over Florida threatening to become a hurricane and close the Kennedy Space Centre. From space, everything looks so calm and harmless. And nobody can hear you scream, which is a plus unless you are the moron who decided to kite surf in Miami using the storm winds, logically crashing against a wall (the following video may be too strong for the sensibilities of some readers).
I can't wait until they install a permanent high definition feed up there. On the ISS, I mean. We have enough people with cameras down here. [NASA]

Just an FYI, I've been told the kite surfer was a lady by a friend of mine in St. Cloud.

Sweet. But i will say that was one of the weakest tropical storms i've ever been in. Hardly any rain, hardly any wind. Pretty fail imo. I was actually hoping to get a day off work.

@simranali: He was waiting for the wall to do it for him. I think that may have been the kink in his plan.

That's CGI. Everyone knows the space program is fake. It's all done on a soundstage in New York.
But seriously, WOW. If NASA would stream high def live camera shots of the Earth and every cable company carried it as part of a basic package, it would be the most popular channel.

@bobojuice: Weak is usually a factor of which quadrant you are in.....I used to live in New Orleans (way pre-Katrina) and when they'd turn up into Mississippi, we'd actually have great weather by being in the "good" quadrant.
Also, that video of the idiot is sure to be a classic that goes around for years.

@Git Em SteveDave displays attention-grabbing vanity: They do. It's called NasaTV. Check your local provider for availability.

@SQLGuru: I know it did just graze us down here in miami, but it was still weak as shit. They were forecasting alot more than went on. My girlfriend lives in orlando and she said it was weak as hell too and she got most of it up there. All in all, pretty fail storm if you ask me.

@simranali: Kite surfers harness themselves to the kites' handles. Just letting go wouldn't solve a thing without unclipping the carabiner first.

Also, it looked to me like they were kite jumping on the beach. The video is crap, but I didn't see any boards.

Hey! A kitesurfer just got injured by a massive wind gust!
.. What's he look like?
/sticks tongue out side of mouth, shuts eyes, tilts head
.. No, no, what'd he look like before the injury?
/screams, waves hands, yells "ohhhh shittttttt..."

@JEmlay: You can let go, it's a basic safety measure and the first lesson of kite surfing. If you can't control it, let it go.

@Jesus Diaz:
Not the rigs I've used. You can't let it go once it's pulling you with 50+ pounds of force. You have no way to pull back enough slack to unhook it.
