Treadmills Used to Play WoW (Result: Usain Bolt Couldn't Cut It as a Blood Elf)
Posted by John Herrman at 11:00 AM on August 26, 2008
Most avid World of Warcraft players don't wonder too much about what it would be like to truly run as often and as far as their avatars, because a.) that sounds hard and b.) they're too busy wondering would it would be like to run at all. Nonetheless, some crafty young WoWers managed to hook up a couple of treadmills and joysticks to their computers in such a way as to simulate actually running across Azeroth. Even when some handicaps were programmed into the system, the (sort of) reality was clear: WoW characters are FAST.
This is a funny concept in the first place, because as anyone who has played WoW know, you do a LOT of running. Miles upon virtual miles of terrain can be covered in a short session, usually at a pretty fast clip. The guys over at Manapotions.com went to great lengths to estimate the actual speed of their avatars, then built a surprisingly effective apparatus out of some old treadmills, bikes wheels and optical mice (for speed tracking). The results was kind of like the ultimate expression of the Wii "get involved in the game" ethos, except with 1000% more exertion and 97% less fun. I gotta get my friends to try this. I hear the whole "put a Twinkie on the end of a stick" thing works pretty well.

Why are their treadmills sloped so high?
Come on, I watched, their characters weren't running that fast.

that's actually sorta fuckin awesome...
@renster: don't forget that they gotta work against the resistance of the treadmill. you tried running on a treadmill that's off? not that this is exactly the same thing, but i imagine that this is a bit harder than just joggin outside.

@renster: most runners don't see too much of the gym either... cuz ya know.. they're out running. treadmills just don't cut it.

@fatASCurtis: Please... I run about 20 to 25 miles a week and over half of that is on a treadmill. I'm not saying I'm an expert runner by any means but I usually finish in the front group on most of my 5K's and 10K's.

I think those treadmills are off and the guys are actually forcing the belt to move, and that's why they're getting so tired so fast...
could be wrong though.

They say at the end: WoW characters run at 12mph in-game. I'm not sure where that comes from ... but 12mph is 100m in under 19 seconds. I could do that ... heck, I could probably hold the pace out to 200m or even 300m. But no more than that, and I doubt I could do it at all if I were carrying weapons and armour and stuff..

That didn't make any sense. 1) In WoW, characters move at only two speeds; walking and running. There is no gradation to speed, so the characters are going to move the same speed regardless of how fast the treadmills go. 2) One scene showed one of them being stunned (the little stars above their head) for a bit, to coincide with one of the runners getting tired. Again, this is a fabrication. In the game you get stunned if something hits you, and would have nothing to do with what you are doing on the treadmill. Contrived.
Yes, I know this is uber-geeky, but I'm just saying.

@Twoje: They say the treadmills are manual, not powered.

@roberttravis: That's actually dazed, not stunned. The characters walked at one speed, stutter-stepped when higher than the walking speed, and ran once they hit 6 miles an hour. I think the daze was caused by something hitting the character, not by the walking.

I should show this to my brother, who sits on his ass playing video games every day. Not that it would cause some kind of miracle. But I can dream...

i suspect that had they used better quality treadmills they would have found it a little easier, that thing was so wobbly they probably spent a good bit of energy just trying to keep balance.

Do you go flying off the back of the treadmill when you get your epic mount?

Oh sure, they *had* to use an MX Revolution mouse... which is a laser mouse by the way, not optical.

@roberttravis: They could easily simulate traversing a distance by combining running full speed, with walking, with stopping. If you notice closely when he started running, it was as if you were hitting the walk/run toggle on and off quickly until he got up to run speed. I'm sure it was an estimation and not exact, but they could make it more exact, but the character would seem to be jerky as it would be toggling itself from stopping/walk/run, etc.
Regarding the 'daze', I figure you just didn't see the baddie behind him hitting him since it seemed pretty zoomed into it.
Yeah, I play a bit :D

I had this idea too, just didn't get off my ass and build anything. But really the reason I didn't bother was once I thought about it, I play WOW for hours on end. There is no way I could run that far for real. I would bet a long Saturday session (4-6 hours or more which I have done)would be a marathon. Literally. So I just thought it would be better to just put a mouse and keyboard on the top of a real treadmill and walk while you play. The treadmill has not effect on the game. It's just you walking your lazy ass while you play. But that's been thought of too. The office treadmills have been on Giz more than once. Damn my procrastination.

@baltwade: what i mean is you don't need to necessarily workout (anaerobically) to benefit as a runner. being strong helps, but isn't as key as say muscular endurance or aerobic exercises. Either way, kudos to these two.
