Toyota Winglet Sport Feels Like Inline Skates for Klutzs Like Me
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 12:00 AM on August 3, 2008
Yesterday we saw in action the Large and Medium models of the Segway-killer Toyota Winglet. Here you have the Type S, which stands for small but, according to Toyota, could also mean Sports. Looking at the video, it makes sense: basically, this thing seems to allow for faster, more aggressive driving, achieving a behaviour similar to inline skates. Someone should boost their engines speed as soon as they arrive. [Toyota]

@GoogleMeCaesar: In Middle-Earth, the "S" class is marketed as the "L" class to hobbits.

Well... why does it look like it has a mini seat? I'm guessing they expect people to act like complete morons and try to ride this sitting down. That sounds awesome.

Or you could be like ABC's favorite drunken cokehead, Tim Allen, and just ramp up the power yourself.
Because that always worked for him.

Like I said on the other ones, the wheels are way to small to be practical, any uneven surface and it's going to get problems. Thats one of the reasons the Segway's wheels are so big.

@GoogleMeCaesar: Looks like it's a stabilizer. Something to grip with your inner legs so you have more control or something.

Does it have a built in weight limit, so that if you get too fat because you've ceased walking, you are forced to become a pedestrian again until you've slimmed down?
Can we just skip to the end and get the chairs from Wall-E?

To make up for the Winglet posts can we have a day of cool and drool worthy gadgets that are made to get people outdoors and active? New bikes? Fancy kayaks? Overly teched out hiking and camping gear?

I don't care what it looks like, it only goes 3.7 mph! You might think it looks cooler than a Segway, but when it comes down to it, it still looks pretty dorky, and at 3.7 mph, you'll be around for 3 times as long, looking dorky.
I love the Segway, but this just seems like a lame, trendy version that costs less. Yeah, people'll probably buy it, but it seems to me that it's like the Eee Segway. In other words, LAME!

They don't show anyone's upper body... perhaps because, like the Segway, you look like a major tool.
But then I thought bluetooth headsets looked tool-y too and they're all the rage. Live long and prosper, you bluetooth Uhurus out there.

@Platypus Man:
Probably a lot better that it doesn't go more then light jogging speed. Which means you can comfortably use these things along with pedestrians on the sidewalk without being a safety hazard.
Also, it means you won't have to wear those stupid helmets that Segway police guards use. Also, having the thing a paltry 10 kilos means it can be easily lifted and tucked away under a chair unlike a segway and more like skates.
I'd personally be interested in one of these for recreational use, but only if its below $500.

Too slow
but I suppose that might have to do with power consumption and smaller wheels.

The battery on that thing just couldn't last very long, not enough room to put it. I'd wear a backpack to carry it when it dribbles out of power. Actually if they had a modest backpack external battery option it could probably run all day. The wheels are small though, hit a rut and you'll be flyin!

The Segway is so people can stand instead of walk, now this for people who want to stand instead of roller skate. The issue will be that tiny battery though, there's just no room for one that would last. Also there's no item that can compensate for wearing a backpack. Just that alone (and that's what you'll be wearing) will hurtle you into Dork Factor 10. You'll also need one big enough to hold that thing when the battery fails and you're dribbling along at .03 mph.
I really think the X Files was a documentary of the first Bush administration and they are sending this technology to us to fatten us up before our alien overlords land and start building giant buffet tables over all the population centers.

@thechansen: I second that... I see 0 practical use for this thing. If you live in a city, walk or get a bike. Neither of which uses electricity, and cost a lot less. Also you wont look like a douche... a fat douche at that.
And you know people are gonna use these things to get to their job just so that they can sit down all day. Before you know it people will be winded by getting up to use the bathroom and start wearing diapers! pee pants FTL!
