Touch Screen RC Star Trek Enterprise Boldly Goes Where No RC Vehicle Has Gone Before
Posted by Jack Loftus at 3:00 AM on August 25, 2008
Interstellar space flight may have been poo-poo'd on by astrophysicists this week, but that doesn't mean we can't have a little pseudo space-faring fun with this first-of-its-kind RC Star Trek Enterprise. Due to arrive in May 2009, the US$80 foam flyer is controlled via a vintage Star Trek touchscreen communicator (Captain James T. Kirk womanising is not necessary, but recommended).
You charge the RC Enterprise with a=the tricorder-shaped charger seen above (sorry, no space dock just yet). After a 15-minute charge, the Enterprise is ready to fly again. [Entertainment Earth via Geek Alerts]

I believe there is a phaser firing in the picture. Let's hope that made it to production.

Yeah - how does that bad boy fly anyway? I'm confused...

Now, I can see the main disk is the lifting shape for the wing, is there one or two ducted fans in the tail??

How do you get it back when you've sent it somewhere at warp 9?

I was going to say "In my ass?", but then I had a repressed memory surface. Now I can't say that and I'm crying.

@Badmofo: Those people are pretty confident flying that thing next to the water.

Captain, I can't change the laws of physics! Except that I somehow made this thing fly. WTF is keeping it aloft?!

Here is a video of the one I flew. I posted cameras on the inside and got some pretty good camera shots from the outside too.

NCC 1701-D FTW. I can't stand looking at the original enterprise, horrible design.

@TimurY: I know, I will try harder to make sure all cameras I put in my micro-spaceships are registered in the future. My micro-spacecraft was just already over budget as it was.

Obviously touch screens are not the future, as Spock was still pressing buttons in Star Trek. Don't worry MS, buttons are the future. Wait, what post is this....

@BiZarRroBALlmeR: Does your computer feature Majel Barrett's voice saying "Working...Working..."? No? Then no dumping on the Enterprise's computer systems. It beats the hell out of whatever Adam West had in the Batcave.

That's it. I've decided that if I'm ever on a Federation starship I will guarantee my safety by either hiding under my bed or taking a dump of epic length. Those are two places that you never see someone die.
Standing by the computer panel? Dead.
Standing by the warp core? Dead.
Standing in a hallway? Dead.
Standing near a kiosk on the bridge? Flipped over dead.
Standing anywhere in engineering? Locked in and dead.
Running for cover? Dead dead dead.
Cowering under the bed in quarters? Never shown and presumably safe.
Dropping a deuce? Bathrooms were never shown and are presumably ray-shielded and heavily armored. Safe as summer in there.
There's also a chance that drinking with Guinan will guarantee survival but there is the nasty problem of having to put up with Whoopi Goldberg and her freakish lack of eyebrows.

Oh yea, I almost forgot. This isn't actually the first flying Enterprise toy. This is by about 10 years or more: [www.amazon.com]

@dc-united: No problem. Since it's travelling at warp speed, it will arrive wherever you sent it before you actually sent it, so it should still be right there with you even after it arrives at it's destination. It's like a boomerang...you can't possibly lose it!!!

They has had an enterprise E rocket as well as an enterprise D hand launched foam glider that I still have somewhere around here (actually flew quite nicely always wanted to upscale and RC it!)

Make one that can be controlled with my iPhone and I'll buy! WiFi range would limit it to short distances. Modern RC radios have USB inputs. Someone should make a app that allows me to fly my gas RC using the accelometers in my phone.
