Toshiba's Regza ZF HDTVs Do Their Own Cell-Processor Upscaling
Posted by Kit Eaton at 9:46 PM on August 28, 2008
Toshiba's new Regza ZF HDTVs don't upscale your DVDs to HD resolution with any old chipset or engine: they do it with a Cell-processor based system. Bonkers! It's the first TV to upscale with a Cell, and according to its European executive vice president, Toshiba's future "does not involve Blu-ray disc" but will use this sort of tech to deliver high-res imagery. The upscaling system uses the Cell for some advanced image-processing techniques, creating interpolated pixels to give the final image "near-HD" quality. The sets will also have Active Vision M100 100Hz HD picture processing, 178-degree viewing angle, 30,000:1 contrast ratio and 10-bit processing. The ZF TVs will be in 40- and 46-inch sizes, the 40-inch out now with pricing of around US$2,390, the 46-pricing and availability is not announced yet. I heard a while back that Toshiba was coming out with a super upscaling DVD player using the cell processor. Its probably the same tech, so now I'm wondering how well it works, and if there is a way to get my hands on it without buying a new tv.

Toshiba management should meet with Dr. Phil and get over their Blu Rayge or they'll spend the next several years designing products driven by Post Format War Stress Disorder.

I don't care how good your upscaling algorithms are, it will never be as good as true HD.
They're guessing at pixels that aren't there; even if it's an educated guess.

People forget Toshiba holds many patents for DVD they want to prolong those revenue streams for as long as possible so its not about being bitter its about the bottom line so its DVD or paid the BDA for bluray

What's the difference between hooking my PS3 to my HD LCD and using IT'S own cell proc to upscale my DVDs?

I'm looking forward to what this TV can do.
So far, Toshiba's LCD tv's have received some great reviews.
Sound and Vision included one of the Regza models as one of their best techs.

And here are some reviews to the previous ZF model in the UK:
