Timelapse Video: Building the Lego Death Star Diorama
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 4:39 AM on August 1, 2008
Here's a bunch of crazy Lego heads building the Lego Death Star diorama, probably the best Lego set available this side of the Millennium Falcon with 3,803 pieces, and 21 mini-figs--a stunning number for any Lego set--but definitely the most fun to play with, with 14 scenarios from the original movie.

Looking at the time it's taking me to finish the Falcon, I'm not going to try this unless I can get Lindsay Joy someone to help me. [Lego in Gizmodo]

OMG! Ponies!

Does it include the poorly-designed trash compactor or the canteen? Sorry, I just love posting them. They never stop getting funny. Well, maybe they did four months ago.
Fine. Blink me.

Fake. Nobody who owns that set has that many friends. On a related note, I very badly want one. Both the set and a group of friends.

I am reminded of a scene from Clockwork Orange - William Tell Overture in the background, high-speed time-lapse action; of course the similarity kind of ends there...
Those who've seen it will understand.

Bunch of sissies had to use "teamwork" to complete it. Real LEGO heads would each buy one and see who can complete it the quickest with the loser having to buy dinner. And pay for the strippers.

@Daytodaz3: You only work for 30 minutes a day? Sweet deal. Unless you meant you were going to watch it on a loop, in which case you have bigger problems.

@ninjagin: I've a bunch of Lego to build. Last one the Town Plan 50th Anniversary, which I got while I was at Billund. I see the box every day and it kills me to see it there unopened. I wish I had the time and the spirit to build it now, but it'll have to wait.
@berbar: Too late. I'm moving to NYC.

Nice! But they could've frozen the complete work at the end of the video instead of putting a blank screen.
LOLed at the elevator music version.

Whoah I'm in that! Before the video starts, the chin in the upper right is mine!
And No it isn't fake... it was a time-lapse taken at Brickworld, after the new set was unveiled.

Why is there a strike-thru over my name! Jesus, you know I will totally help you build the Death Star! But honestly, I think it would take for ever because I would have to sit and swoon over every scene and if I saw a new brick or even a brick in a new color! They you' have to worry about be stealing Vader because I a am sucker for unique Vaders and this one has new design!
Honestly, if you know anything about building LEGOs, it would kill you to have to share building it with *that many* people! But I'm all about the mini-figures. If I just got to put together all the mini-figs I *might* be able to handle it.

@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M:
The whole team-building thing sorta depends on the project. Speed builds, which have become something of a mainstay of LEGO conventions worldwide since the debut of the UCS ISD, are pretty much only possible with a sizable group of people (otherwise you get stuck building one set for the entire show and miss the chance to peruse the displays or get in on all the neat discounts). Or there's one that's coming up the weekend after Labor Day. There's a guy who runs a toy museum in Ohio (mostly LEGO-oriented) who's going to be organizing a mass-build of a "lifesize" version of the fabled Yellow Castle at the inaugural BrickShow event this year (I'm not sure how lifesize it will be, but reportedly you'll actually be able to walk through it like a giant, squishy, oddly-proportioned minifig). I mean, seriously, doing a project of that size without help would kill anyone's interest in the brick for at least a couple years (heck, I remember hearing grumblings about brick-burnout before we even finished building the lifesize Tony the Tiger sculpture, and that's from a couple guys who have both built skyscrapers that are taller than 7'). For those of us who aren't Nathan Sawaya, sometimes it's better to share credit for a finished work than to take sole credit for something that gets abandoned before it's even halfway done.

@Purple Dave:
Goodness gracious me-oh my. You never cease to amaze me. First, this is a standard -albeit large- LEGO set, *not* like a huge undertaking involving tens of thousands of pieces.
Please. I know you just *love* to go around correcting people like you are some sort of all-knowing person, but one *should not compare* an undertaking of creating the original yellow castle in a larger scale to the new death star.
Please, try and find a better flaw in my statement the next time. I have tried to be nice to you, sent you message abut new Bionicles, and yet you still feel compelled to extrapolate one tiny sentence about building *standard* LEGO sets into the fact that i discourage teamwork for a large undertaking,
I know you love LEGO, just try not to put me down.
