This Week's Blu-ray Releases

Giz Pick of the Week: The Nightmare Before Christmas
AU: Sorry folks, I think this schedule is US only - but I still hope the digital file version is available on the Region B releases...
Disney DVDs have a history of top-notch A/V transfer, and Tim Burton's masterpiece of stop-motion animation should take full advantage of Blu-ray's higher resolution. On top of that, you get a slew of bonus features--everything from the original DVD set along with a few more, including a feature-length commentary by directors Tim Burton and Henry Selick and composer Danny Elfman. Also, you can (legally) transfer the film to your iPod via the bundled DisneyFile Digital Copy--you know, for if you need to watch the movie at all times and all places.
Here are the rest of this week's Blu-ray releases:
• Action Starter Pack (Universal)
• The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) (Warner)
• Afro Samurai: Season One (FUNimation)
• Blue Man Group: How to Be a Megastar Live! (Rhino)
• Dude, Where's My Car? (MGM)
• End of Days (Universal)
• Heroes: Season One (Universal)
• Heroes: Season Two (Universal)
• Miami Vice (2006) (Universal)
• Pale Rider (Warner)
• Postal (UMVD)
• Redbelt (Sony)
• U-571 (Universal)
• What Happens in Vegas (Fox)

Nightmare is something I will be picking up on BD. Also, saw a news mention that Paramount is going to do buy-backs worth $10. Godfather is on the list. Evidently, you need to send in the proofs of purchase (the little cardboard tab thingees) from the old and the new to get a rebate.
It's a rebate but it's better than nothing.

"Anything you'll be picking up? "
Not from that list.
We rented Vantage Point on BR last night... found it very thought-provoking...
Why oh why, with thousands of great movies to convert, do they release such shit ?

I'll get the Heroes set at some point, but on sale.
Actually holding off on Nightmare though at the moment. Polar Express just got announced as a 3D re-release, and since Nightmare got a similar 3D theater release a year prior, I can only imagine, if it sells well, a Nightmare 3D re-release wont be far behind.

Not at $35 to $40 a pop, sorry.
DVD on up-conversion - almost as good, half the price.

I would love to pick up The Nightmare Before Christmas, but it's a bit too pricey at $30-35. My limit on BD is $25 unless I really have to have it (or unless it was Planet Earth).
I might have to give Heroes 2 a second chance. I lost interest in the series after the 3 episode in season 2. Season 1, however, was great.

My mistake 1.66:1 while not widescreen is actually the original ratio of the film so you can't ask for more than that.

Still not widescreen, but the video quality is excellent
The movie retains its 1.66:1 aspect ratio with small pillarbox bars on the sides of the 16:9 frame. The picture is incredibly sharp and vivid, revealing a world of detail never before seen on home video. It feels like you've been placed inches away from the puppets to bask in the complexity of their design and execution. The movie's style revels in darkness, and the transfer's contrast range is expertly rendered with deep black levels and plenty of shadow detail, clearly delineating the black of Jack's clothing from the night around him. Brighter parts of the frame are handled just as well. The candy colors of Christmas Town and the garish neon and black light of Oogie Boogie's lair leap off the screen with surreal vibrancy.

$28 bucks on Amazon. I'll prolly wait and see if I can get under $25. This digital copy is killing me, they raise the prices for it but some of us dont really care for it.
