The Night Coaster: For Considerate Snoozers
Posted by Matt Hickey at 1:00 PM on August 7, 2008
The Night Coaster is a small device you keep on your bedside table to host anything you might need during the night, like eyeglasses or your cigarettes or keys for the handcuffs. The neat bit is that it has a motion sensor that makes the coaster glow as you reach over to it, but not enough to wake your partner, just enough so that you can get what you need quietly. I believe this would be a great low-cost gift for the wedding of a couple you don't really care about that much. [Taylor Gifts via 7Gadgets via Geek.com]

@bosskev: Uh yeah, homage to Lindsay. That's the ticket. Of course I don;t like wearing womens clothes. I like women to do that. How about that ball game?

Where's your hand?
Well, I was trying to find the light, but I think it's wedged between two pillows.
Those aren't pillows!

Hey, Git Em SteveDave blah blah blah, I've been meaning to tell you for weeks how I love your "Homage to LindsayJoy" avatar! I've even been thinking of slapping a couple of cookies on it...

@bosskev: Honest officer! I didn't punch her. I was waving my arm to activate the motion sensitive light on my stand. Hey, what's that?! Don't taze me bro!

It's hideous! Couldn't they bother making look a little better than some cyborg football phone? Ugh.

So, let me see if I've got this straight. It's the middle of the night and your room is dark. You want to find, say, your keys on the dresser, so you wave your hand directly over this gadget and then it glows a little so you can see your keys laying in the coaster.
Hmmm...in the dark, how did you know just where to put your hand in the first place (since the coaster is not yet glowing)? Seems to me if there already is enough ambient light in the room for you to see exactly where to wave your hand you've also got enough light to see your keys laying there. $25? Pass.

I used to have to get up at 4:30 when I worked at my last job. My GF at the time, didn't. I keep a little keychain LED light hanging on the doorjam. It's good for emergencies, but also let me navigate the bedroom w/o turning a light on. In hindsight, I should have just turned the light on.

@Git Em SteveDave displays attention-grabbing vanity: Yeah, great ball game. Bears all the way!
Of course, living in San Francisco as I do, I doubt my usage of "bears" and "ball games" is quite the same as yours.

@bosskev: Depends how close to Folsom and Sunday Mass you are I suppose.

They need to pick a different color. Blue lights at night blind the shit out of me and make me want to dig out my eyes.

Or you could, you know, get an alarm clock with a LED display. Enough brightness to find your glasses, and it has the added functionality of an alarm clock!

The light from my alarm clock works fine. Of course, sometimes I knock the clock off the nighttable and they take my glasses with them.

Hows about putting a glass of water on it. Stupid company didn't even mention that. I mean a glass of water is much more common than eyeglasses. Not everyone wears glasses you stupid company! Thanks for pointing out this is exclusively for the glasses industry. Its more oblong than circular which I feel is dumb. Won't be getting my money any time soon!

@bosskev: @Xavoc: Eww and Eww! I wouldn't mind going back to San Fran to visit though, I was just there in early July (for the first time) and really enjoyed it.
At first this seemed like a great idea, but depending on how close you have to get for the motion sensor to notice you is the dealbreaker I suppose. Course if you have an alarm clock that's bright enough (as previously mentioned) it's rather pointless.
