The Dirtsurfer: New Bike And Skateboard Hybrid Thing
Posted by Matt Hickey at 1:00 PM on August 23, 2008
It's part bike and part skateboard and it looks all fun. It's the Freestyle Dirtsurfer and it's a new hybrid like toy for all of you X Games types who can't wait for winter to get here soon enough. One neat touch is a Razor-scooter-like brake on the back wheel so you don't end up in the ER the first time you try it on a downhill. And for US$450, you really don't want to crash it too much. Old News! these have been out for years. most fun going down a big grass hill at top speed Live in Perth Oz and we have a few such hills), roads are fun too but oncoming cars are not. great for breaking stuff - on you!
With a low center of gravity they are quite stable when you get some momentum up, just hard to take off on at first..

@AJ_Syrinx: Slap a motor on it and call it the Batpod.
I'm not so sure about how safe this thing actually is.

From the looks of it, it seems you can also jump on it to get some speed.
But yeah, I have a big enough scar on my arm that was a result of downhill longboard... and I value my legs and feet too much to try this thing.
Would be awesome to see people actually using that... and the unavoidable crashes too.

@enchantedgoose: Little thing called gravity. Seems to be catching on bigtime.

@enchantedgoose: I think its mainly a downhill thing.
Downhilling on a longboard is dangerous enough, and that has 4 wheels. Personally, I like being able to walk so I won't be buying one of these...

I swear if I searched I could find a functionally similar device from 10 years ago...
But I'm too lazy.

They already have a very similar product out for around $600-$800 called a BushPig. It's very cool. I don't know which one I prefer yet though.

My friend has a dirt surfer, actually took quite some time to ship, he probably had one of the first in production, none the less, be prepared to use this thing downhill only as its the only way to get it going, once you do be prepared to bail because you get going, you get going ridiculously fast and if you don't know how to use it, like myself.. once you stop, it won't be pretty. I myself am going to stick to bombing with my longboard.

@enchantedgoose: Not gravity but babies. These other guys are flat wrong. Oh and it also has an invisible proton sail that pull you along when babies are few and far between.

@doobiebros2two: Of course its babies...duh. That proton sail thing is just a rumor though. Babies will never run out.

Ok I have no idea how we got to talking about babies, but the fact is this thing is great for going downhill really quick. I have been wanting one for a couple years now, but I don't live near any hills. Does anyone have any positive experience on one of these expensive wonders?

New? I have two of these sitting in my closet that I and a friend bought 8 years ago. Dirtsurfer brand and everything...although they've definitely improved the braking system: mine only have a hand-held cable brake thing that's somewhat annoying to hold. I took a hard bail on it once; just scraped my knees up, but certainly made me rethink using them sans protection at high speeds.
I also have a Bushpig sitting outside that a poster above mentioned. Too much damn money spent on toys! I need to sell of these things. Any takers?

You don't just have to ride DH on these. You can use a wing and ride them kite-board style on a beach, or similar.

It's coolness is only rivaled by the sheer number of ways I could make myself look like an ass trying to ride one.

You stand on it, hence the 2 foot holds. While this dirtsurfer looks a little heavy, most dirtsurfing is done in a desert with large kites to pull you. A great place to do it is along the outskirts of Las Vegas, where there is plenty of wind and sand. I suppose it could also be used like a mountain board, on BMX dirt courses.
Here's a vid with some of it in action

I bought one of these from the Ausie company in 1998. It was so much fun, but difficult. But much more fun than traditional skateboard with rubber wheels.

when will kids realize your body isn't indestructible? Just watch a few minutes of mtv's scarred and you'll realize how stupid xtreme sports is. Just think how wonderful metal screws in your bones will feel when your about 50.

Ive had one for about four years. A steep learning curve, but definately fun. The brake is kind of hard to use, so i've rigged a handheld brake from an MBS mountainboard onto it. Heres a link to a video of my friend crashing.

I have had one of these for about 3 years now. There is a steep learning curve, but it's great for excursions. you can ride it flat ground if you have herculean ankle strength, but you're better off taking a bike. Here's a video of my friend crashing on it. It gets up to speed fast.

Skateboarding is popular. These knock-off POS devices are not. Get over it, industry. Either stop polluting the pool, or make a product that kills people willing to look that stupid.
