Test Card TV Cozy Reminds Us That We're Old
Posted by Jason Chen at 8:10 AM on August 27, 2008
Do kids nowadays even know what TV test screens look like? In the world of 24 hour broadcasting, how often do stations prefer to put these up instead of some Everybody Loves Raymond rerun? Not very often, but if you want to re-live those glory days of annoyingly bright colours in felt form, there's this TV Cozy. The standard one costs US$25, but you'll have to pay more if you own a larger sized set. Putting these on when you're not watching TV should make the set last a few more weeks between dustings, plus also protects against errant baby spit. [Etsy via Boing Boing]

Errant baby spit is the bane of my HDTV's existence... that and greasy little fingerprints.

A screen cosy?!
Jeez.
This would have made a far better sort of hipster satchel pattern... perhaps with a bit of an old-school Trinitron border....

@nilzxx: Sure, he might seem happy to put it on, and it does offer protection, which is good, but there's always some loss of sensitivity, and then there's having to put it on after the show's already started, which he may not be so happy about.

It's also cool for people who want their living rooms to seem less TV-ish. Like if they were Amish (or Mennonite) or something...

@bosskev:
The cozy wouldn't really be protecting the tv if I'm watching adult video on it, now would it?

I'd like it better if it was the old indian head test pattern, assuming I would drop cash on TV cozy in the first place.

They should make that into a full size blanket. What would really cool is if they made OS versions like Windows and Mac like a plain desktop.

@jschell: Aargh! You've exposed a fatal flaw in my otherwise perfectly Machiavellian logic...
OK. So, umm, make one out of Saran Wrap?

@bosskev: LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that had me rolling found it hiliarious. Speak for yourself tho buddy.
And this would prevent me from watching TV cuz i'd probably not want to go through the trouble of taking it off then putting it away or even throwing it on the floor would be too much since the colors would still be irking you from a distance. and no matter where you put it it'd annoy the shxt out of you cuz you cant get the colors out of your head. Ingenious invention a great way to stop people from watching tv.

I recently hooked up a digital converter box for a friend who still rocks the rabbit ears, and lo and behold, I found a local station that runs the test screen 24/7 on one of it's extra dtv signals (you know, like 65.4 or something). Pretty amusing for about 30 seconds.

Ah, good ol' SMPTE color bars. It's missing the pluge pulse though. (And a 1kHz tone too) But I'm not sure if felt comes in that many colors. I'd totally buy a king-sized blankie version of that though. Not that my wife would allow it on the bed.

Wow! I never thought I'd see Etsy blogged on Gizmodo. My wife has a store on there for her clothing line. I alway thought Etsy and Gizmodo were about as far apart as you could get!

Oh, now that's funny.
I would totally buy one, except that I'm an old person who doesn't own a flat panel TV.
Maybe I can use this to make my own TV cozy instead.
