Tascam GT-R1 Guitar Recorder Lets You Capture Those Brilliant Solos
Posted by Kit Eaton at 6:27 PM on August 4, 2008
Tascam—last heard of here on Giz with a portable MP3 guitar "trainer"—has come up with another gizmo that may interest you if you're a guitarist. The GT-R1 is a portable MP3 recorder for capturing your axe work, capable of recording to MP3/WAVE at 48/44.1 kHz 24-bits uncompressed. That's not bad quality, and since it works with SDHC, you'll have plenty of recording time. Better yet it's got multiple effects built-in, and also has a "trainer" function which allows you to play along with your fave tracks at your choice of speed—without changing the pitch. Sounds pretty handy, and it'll be out August 26th in Japan for around US$310. [Akihabaranews]

So you have to plug the guitar into it instead of the amp... so all you can hear is the dead strings from the guitar? Or does the sound come out those measly speakers as it's recording? I see it has headphones out.... hmm...

Peice of shit. For about $260 you can get a Digidesign MBOX Mini with a mic in and quarter inch in with Pro Tools LE. You'll have the same industry standard software that the big studios use. With the capability of 32 tracks or 48 if you buy the music production toolkit. Spend about $80 more get an sm57 and pair it with a good sounding amp and you'll have unbeatable quality compared to that tascam.

@godwhacker: I could tune a guitar with a fish. Might be pretty gross though.

@jim82488: The MBOX sounds like crap, plus you can't expect guitarists to be able to navigate ProTools easily, if they have never used it before. Tascam is no better. I recently heard Tascam is dropping support for Gigastudio, which is a MAJOR screw up: [createdigitalmusic.com] For anyone who wants to record cheaply and NOT be tethered to Digidesign, I suggest:
Mackie Onyx Satellite FireWire Recording System
[www.mackie.com]
$199
You can get it cheaper than this thing or a MBOX, do more with it and it will definitely sound better.

The Boss Micro-BR does all this and multitrack recording, for a lower retail price. I bought mine on craigslist for $175.

People... this is not about the best budget recording solution, it's about the best portable all-in-one recording solution. The effects, drum backing, and etc, are all built in. The attraction with something like this is that you can plug in and practice or try out a few things, anywhere, without bothering anyone. If you worked out something you really like, you can record it so that you can retrieve it later.

I also have a Micro-BR. To be fair, this has a much better looking interface and stereo microphones. The Micro-BR interface is just slightly above Aweful.

@godwhacker: I've done nasty things to guitars that make Hendrix look mellow, but I try to be nice to the ones that aren't beaters.
