T6 Volkswagen Concept Car is an Office on Wheels
Posted by Sean Fallon at 7:30 AM on August 21, 2008
Having easy access to your office 24 hours a day can be both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, you will never miss a beat. On the other, it may seem like you are always stuck at work. With that in mind, check out the T6 concept workaholicmobile designer Alexander Zhukovsky has put together. It comes complete with all of the technology and space you and your co-workers need to get the job done--even when you are stuck in traffic. In other words, it is a boardroom on wheels.
The car is sectioned off into two pods connected by a central hinge--one for the driver and one for working passengers. And, because the wheels are fixed to the outside of the pods, the space inside is maximised. All-in-all the T6 is a fantastic looking concept, but it seems a little impractical given videoconferencing alternatives. Still, in certain situations, it would offer companies the chance to get out of a stuffy boardroom and bring employees to interesting new locations or provide a close-up view of a construction project. Again, the T6 is only a concept at the moment, so I wouldn't expect Volkswagen to be rolling them off the assembly line anytime soon. [Cardesign via AutoMotto via The Design Blog]

Oh my God!
Did you hear? Wendy's accounting team got hit by a drunk driver while they were in a meeting about the Pennington account!
Steve has 3rd degree burns over 75% of his body from the coffee maker!

Am I the only one that thinks this would be a hoot at drive throughs?

Do you have to call the IT dept. to change a flat? You could be stranded for weeks to have them show up with a tire that doesn't fit...

Huh!
It's got seats! And a table! And a TV! And everything that vans had 25 years ago!
Just think, if they'd only added a stove, it would be as up-to-date as an 80 year old Airstream trailer.

@mildretard: It's like they're trying to reinvent the wheel or something.

Also it mows lawns and compresses grass into little balls.
Seriously, why does every futuristic design concept try to eliminate wheels from the picture?

This is easily my favorite one of the concept cars I've seen on Giz.

I truly appreciate the design concepts illustrated, but the true genius would be the ability to have multiple vehicles that roam to truck stops and other free parking areas and conduct business. Imagine the money saved from not having to lease a building. They would all be wired and networked in perfection. The only caveat is the lack of a commode, but I guess that is what super-sized big gulp cups are for.

I'm having trouble visualizing where exactly the pivot point is inside. They show the pivot from outside, but how are they going to keep Wendy's surviving accounting team from getting pinched or crushed in a sharp turn? My gawd, haven't they been through enough already?

Sure, they look kinda cool. But how far can you go without driving over a speed bump?

All it needs is a bathroom with the 3 seashells in it and I'll be in line for one.

The boardroom-on-wheels aspect of this concept is the most monumentally uninspiring thing that could be done with this chassis. Using that space as a mini-rv to escape FROM the office over lunch would be much better. It could have a bed and mini-kitchen, and your lover could meet you for lunch and you could take a "nap" together, and It could be a tight little audio/video cozy-zone. When gridlock's super awful, you could overnight in the parking lot. I foresee more escape/leisure pods like that coming from the future than mobile offices. The "culture" at VW must clearly be workaholic for the dreammakers to be coming up with depressing visions like this. Next time show us the bachelor-pod first and the office second, that's what concepts are for. And, anyway, where's the new microbus/vanagon replacement that have been teasing us with? VW has kind of lost the plot. The only wow-factor here comes from wondering why they conjured this in the first place.

Why do we insist on trying to create an office on wheels type of design? As IndecisiveMoment said, it isn't inspiring at all. And as brother9 mentions, we already have all of this available in a van. Really, though, the pinnacle of automotive design in terms of being more than just a car was reached when we put BEDS into vans! Work? Hell no! Sleep, ya, sure, later, after the party.

With this car you can conduct a meeting while travelling from one meeting to another meeting.
Basically no work will ever get done.

For places like Manhattan and SF where office space is very expensive, this idea could take off, although it could probably be done in a really classy looking small RV or step van.
It would be great for getting reluctant potential clients to give you a meeting.
