Steve Jobs: Apple Aware of iPhone 2.0 App Fails, Will Fix In September
Posted by Adrian Covert at 11:55 AM on August 20, 2008
It seems a random app crash bug plaguing the iPhone 2.0 software has concerned El Jobso enough to make him personally reply to a user email. According to AppleInsider one of their readers received an email from Jobs that read "this is a known iPhone bug that is being fixed in the next software update in September."
AppleInsider says the app crash bug affects newly downloaded and updated apps, where they instantly quit upon launch. Sometimes reinstalling them helps, sometimes it doesn't. While the 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 updates have done nothing to remedy the problem, some speculate that the problem revolves around root permissions. Either way, this is the first Apple acknowledgment of the problem. [Apple Insider]

Uh...if that e-mail was sent to sjobs@apple.com then it wasn't actually Steve Jobs replying. Thats a dummy account that directs to their Corporate Escalation team. People that work there have been known to make miracles happen when there is a serious issue happening. I remember reading a story about a guy whose MacBook Pro repeatedly failed and after e-mailing sjobs@apple.com he had a return box and a loaner laptop on his doorstep literally two days later.
Still, good news on them fixing issues. Apple is spread extremely thin right now, and its starting to show in their products.

Mine did that after 2.0.1, and I had to get a new iTunes account to remedy it. I even got NetShare working again today!

@jozen: callin bullshit.that it is a service pack. how many small updates and fixes and drivers have been released?
I don´t care other than, it is dumb to say that there´s been 1 update to Vista since it was released. If so, they needed to come out with updates a lot sooner and in smaller fixes and Apple is fixing problems in a quick and efficient manner. I rather have an update daily and have it work better everyday.

Anybody know anything about the iPod Touch 2.0 problem that renders it unable to connect to Wifi through certain routers? I made the mistake of 'upgrading' my Touch a couple of days ago, and am now suddenly unable to connect at home, even though it works fine at public hotspots. On the plus side, I can now use it to roll virtual dice.

Come on Apple. Get it right.
Honestly, once I find a version of your software that works, I'm becoming very reluctant to "upgrade" to a version that may break things. Unless you start cleaning up your act and stop beta testing on your customers, I'm fairly certain my next laptop and music players won't be Apple again.

@rrogahn:
The problem with the way Microsoft releases Service Packs is that it takes too damn long between one release and another. This makes it a pain in the ass to install from scratch because updates take forever to download and install.
Apple takes the approach of having much smaller and more frequent point updates because then you can easily and quickly start from a baseline install and diagnose problems from there. Plus, it's far less likely for updates to interfere with each other, a problem can creep up in Windows.

@jozen: thats not true. SP1 actually includes about 50+ updates. I know i get updates at least once a week.
I recently restored my lappy to factory conditions. I had to install at least 70 updates (not including SP1)
And to be honest, I think Apple does the same thing too. (I'm not 100% sure as I havent owned a Mac)

Software and Pop songs are not the same: Quality Software lives, is supported, needs new releases, takes a long time and a strong team to build.
Apple it's time to get it right. It's not how many apps there are, it's how good the best are. Else you will see a huge migration to Nokia who is courting the quality developers.

@dagamer34: I understand your point about the large installs and long install times, however your comment on updates interfering with each other doesn't make sense. Every fix you make to a code base has the potential of causing problems, doesn't matter if you group them (fixes) together or release them one at a time. The fact that you add a dot to the build number doesn't scare the bugs away.
Updates are tricky, MS used to release them more frequently but we complained that we couldn't keep up, now SP's are released farther apart. Irregardless of the pace of software updates, I'd like to see more testing. By the results I'm not convienced that Apple is doing enough. Which is why I make the statment that they are reactive or "knee jerk" releases and are under the quality bar.
Step up Apple, you used to be all about the quality.

@jozen: Sorry if this has already been said, but when it comes to patching on a regular basis, Microsoft wins. When XP came out, MS would push out a patch to address a bug on a weekly basis. Due to IT requests, the patches were slowed to once a month.
Patch Tuesday was a Microsoft invention. It shows responsibility for the product, dedication to improvement, and respect for the customer.

@dagamer34: Apple copied that from Microsoft. What you've just described is the automatic update system in XP circa 2002. It was done with such regularity that you could set your watch to it.
Apple fanatics used to grief Microsoft for the practice - implying that the fact that Microsoft had the audacity to fix another 3 or 4 bugs a week meant that XP was a terrible OS. The update schedule implied that Microsoft wasn't just going to ship a product and then do nothing to fix inevitable problems.
I hate to single you out but your comment is illustrative of the short selective memory of Apple supporters and the double standard that they inexplicably apply to Microsoft - a company that really isn't in competition with Apple.

I just want to add that Microsoft fixes problems with Vista, lots of updates. The problem is that what you perceive to be a bug or a problem Microsoft sees as a feature.
Examples:
Internet explorer is too memory intensive, Feature
Office 2007 takes too long to open, Feature
There are annoying messages when i try to do anything, Feature
So you see in the end you are just confusing the 'Features' in Windows Vista with problems. If Microsoft though these were problems they would fix them.

I love my iPhone and have not had even 1% of the problems some users have had but I have had my share of quirks. Fact is Apple still had things to fix and it will take time. Software is complex and the more features they have, the more can go wrong. Patches and fixes are now a way of life regardless of the manufacture or OS platform. With technology today, the more shit you "install" (ie. games, apps, screen savers, jailbreak, etc) the more likely you are to have problems. I'm willing to bet that indivuals with the most problems have gone nuts at the app store or "broken" the phone. I'm not saying this is the case for all but I have downloaded a few games and apps and when I tire of them, I delete them. Besides dropped calls (which has gotten better as of late) and a random loss of text sounds, my phone has performed rather well. PDA phones are PCs and they will have to be rebooted and reset from time to time. If you don't want to deal with it, then take it back and get a flip phone.

I found an "easy" fix for the laggy keyboard issues that I, and presumably many others, have been having. First, type any random letter (punctuation doesn't seem to work). Then scroll the cursor back to being in front of that character. Now, just type away as quick as can be and you should be good to go. And of course, delete the extra letter once you are done. When using this, you won't be able to use the Autocorrect feature, which might actually be part of the reason that the typing is lagging.
Let me know if this works for anyone else.

HAHAHAHA!!!!! That's a joke right? Is that why my iPhone 3G crashes at LEAST once per week forcing me to boot by holding the power and home buttons then releasing the power button while continuing to hold the home button so iTunes sees the phone as a new device and forces me to do a factory reset then a restore from backup OF WHICH every time I restore from back only CERTAIN apps contain their app data and all other apps have ZERO app data?
I'll take the stability of Vista over the crap that is OSX (iPhone) any day. CarbonLib error anyone? Oops, RELOAD!!!!
They better fixed these MAJOR issues quick or my iPhone is going on eBay. A phone (regardless of the thrills) is supposed to WORK.....ALL THE TIME.

Posted 9:33 AM 21/8/08
@JEmlay: What is it you've done to the phone to cause this issue?
If this were a regular occurrence, the public outcry would be tremendous and Apple's stock would have taken a huge hit.
@jozen: You realize those 5 releases fix issues across multiple product platforms, and that Vista's SP releases are wrap-ups of hundreds of smaller patches.
I know that the next Leopard patch fixes over 100 bugs so far. In one patch. I don't think anyone has claimed that OS X requires fewer patches. However, many of those patches are driver updates for their proprietary hardware. How many times have you updated your video drivers? Sound drivers? Network drivers? Chipset drivers? Are you including all of the incremental patches for all of your hardware in your count of things fixed? And, every patch for oh, WMP, Office, etc?
Give me a break. Most people don't hate vista because it's crashy. Most people hate it because it's slow, cumbersome, and painful to use. I haven't had this steep of a learning curve to manage an OS ever and my first computer was a VIC 20! I've used Windows since pre 3.1 days. I support multiple OSs, including servers, and Vista is by far the most painful to manage.

At least it will eventually get fixed. I just spent 2 days trying to figure out why I could connect to the router over wifi but not the internet on a windows mobile device. Turns out I had to change the power mode to "CAM" (???) from "Fast Power Save" which was buried the individual wifi profile. Y'know, because that totally makes sense. It's only Windows Mobile version 5, I'm sure they'll have a fix any day now.
