'Steampunk' Watch Sullies Steampunk's Good Name
Posted by Adam Frucci at 7:30 AM on August 5, 2008
I'm not sure if steampunk is currently cool or if it's played out or if it's still "underground," but I do know one thing: this "steampunk" watch takes everything crappy about the aesthetic and includes nothing that makes it cool. It's a lame-looking watch on a boring leather cuff with some gears randomly attached around it. No one in some alternate-Victorian future-past would be caught dead wearing something so half-assed. If you're going to do it, do it properly, with the adornments looking like they're necessary to make the thing run. Put some effort in, people. [eBay via Coolest Gadgets]

I just wanted to add my voice and express in words the absolute garishness, utter failure, ridiculousnesses and pure abomination that this piece of shit represents.
It's like a plastic fish tank lamp with scrolling background from 99c store. Or a rubber darth vader mask with rubber bands in the back and cloak that's as big as a napkin...
Gahhh!!! My eyes burn!

Let's see. Victorian Age Fail...
Steampunk is basically a what-if on the steam age of the Victorian age. What if steam-powered carriages had taken off, etc. This looks like someone bedazzled a watch and some gears to a leather cuff they had left over from an SCA event.

Ummm, considering steampunk is based on the fashions of the 1800s, no self-respecting steampunkian would ever carry anything except a pocket watch. Not to mention the fact that any classic-looking watch that had to be wound would already be the equivalent of steampunk.
Fail.

Hey, it is actually STEAMPUNK this time around. I'm proud of you GIZ. You finally did it right, but on that note; this piece is weak sauce in a blender filled with tacky, cut and paste style. The watch is just put on top.

Here's the place for great, original SteamPunk watches by Haruo Suekichi-- you gotta read japanese, though.
If you want to read a writeup of the artist, there's a pretty good article about him.

The steampunk fad peaked with Wild Wild West.
The only thing that could bring it to a new high is Wild Wild West 2.

Maybe I would like it if it lets me travel back in time to beat the person who made this horrible horrible watch. Oh and writstband watches should die all together!!

A modern (analog) POCKET watch, making absolutely NO pretense of being vistorian has far more Steampunk cred than this IMHO. I mean it doesn't even have a hinged cover for the face...

Bu...what?
Normal watches have plenty of steampunk cred, why does one need to make a clock more clockwork?

first of all, I dont think they were dumb in the Victorian Era, so I doubt they used bent gears.
Second, a watch already uses gears and such to run, you can make it steampunk.

actually there are more of these on this "artist" website...
before going there be warned it's traumatizing experience for anybody with a sense of aesthetics.

Extra-lame. It wouldn't even take that much to salvage this piece, you know? Get ahold of some spiral seashells, encrust the gears with some salt and barnacle-like growths, incorporate the seashells, and you've got a salvaged-steampunk look. It would still be half-assed, but at least it would stand apart from the hundreds of people trying to capitalize on steampunk's surge of popularity. The people making a real killing right now? The Ebay vendors selling watch parts.

i thought it was played out and well out of the underground before Gizmodo ever even had a "steampunk" tag let alone by the time it beat the horse thoroughly to death.
if anything. this pathetic attempt is just confirmation how uncool it really is. surprised it isn't on water skis.

"Steampunk" just jumped the shark.
What's punk about the whole "steampunk" thing anyway? Is that punk as in prison bitch, or punk as in safety pins through the nose? It doesn't even make sense either way.

@SinAmos: What do you mean by that? If you mean to say that Giz has been calling things steampunk when they actually aren't, then you picked the wrong article, because that would technically be categorized as clockwork or clockpunk rather than steampunk.
Anyways, I agree it's not very well done.
