Spy Camera Watch Looks Like it May Actually Be Good For Spying
Posted by Kit Eaton at 12:30 AM on August 21, 2008
Forget those naff spy pens: This spy camera watch from Brando may actually be a decent spying gizmo. For example... can you see the camera in the photo of it? It's in the whorl of the numeral 2, and the watch is pretty convincing. It only shoots 352 x 288 pixel AVIs, but it does carry 2GB aboard, so that should be good for a whole bunch of sneaky vids, and its rechargeable batteries get juice from a USB connection. Just cover up that USB port with a sticker or plug of some kind so it's less obvious, and spy away. Presumably it also tells the time, but that's curiously not mentioned on Brando's web page. Yours for US$236. [Brando]

@jun2san: yeah, if the camera is in the "whirl of the #2", then what is that hole in the center of the #6?
In any case pretty cool for some industrial espionage. All those companies who have banned cell phones with cameras are just fighting an uphill battle as cameras get smaller and smaller...

@mhlaxp: Exactly, it's as if they gave the watch to some rocket scientist to design and build, and then to a ten-year old to lay out the numbers. Wouldn't you want to make a spy-watch, a lot less "noticeable"?

@Hectorvex: Yeah as long as your hand is down there you might as well just go for it.

Kind of hard to get upskirts with a wristwatch...

Sadly, the goofy numbers they used to disguise the camera make the watch itself far from appealing to me, and I love that covert-y, spy-type junk. Guess I'll be sticking to my Zippo-camera for a while longer.

Oh man... I don't wear a watch, so people may notice that something was up... but man, I want one. Bad.

It's not very sneaky with a (relatively) big honkin' USB port on the side; if this is supposed to be sneaky, at least include some kind of port cover or something. And the hole in the six as a decoy? Do they think the idiot at the front security desk is going to say something like, "Hey, that looks like a camera pinhole at six o'clock; let my cover that with a piece of tape so you don't take any pictures, but you go ahead and keep that USB watch and walk around this high-security evil secret headquarters." This watch would only work in an Austin Powers movie.

The hole in the number 6 is the built in led flash.
A microphone behind a glass\plastic cover is not very
effective.

Also, odds are the 6-hole is a microphone.

"Hey, can you tell me the time?"
"Uh, no."
"What? Why not?"
"Don't want to blow my cover."
Seriously, it's a cool idea, but the execution? Who's gonna stand there idle with their watch blatantly facing outward for any length of time and NOT look suspicious?

Yeah, let me spend $236 on a watch then use some $49 stickers to cover up a bit of it. I'd hope at that price they'd give you something to cover it up with :(

@A Disaster of Epic Proportions!: You could also wear the watch reverse style on your inner wrist and signal people from across the room... a lot!

@A Disaster of Epic Proportions!:
have you ever sat at a table with your head resting on your knuckles (a la "the thinker")?
this seems like a very common pose to me (and an excellent way to get a steady shot of a room from your super sneaky timepiece)

@A Disaster of Epic Proportions!: You could just take off your watch and lay it on a table or something for a little while.. I do that and mine isn't even a sneaky ass camera

Why go through all the trouble of cleverly hiding the camera, just to leave the USB port so visible?

And to think my old watch included the usb cable in the wristband. All it did back in the day was scream geek and store 128mb. Then again, this looks quite normal compared to the old MSN watches and the Tokyo Flash alternatives. You could easyly pass it off as just saying it was a plain flash drive if anyone even notices the plug on the side, due to the overwhelming usb jewelery market.
Now to go tie my shoes on a busy sidewalk...

Hasn't anyone noticed from the pictures that one of the two buttons on the left side of the watch changes position, probably by sliding, to cover the port?
