SoulArc Skateboard Has One Big Spring for Surf-Alike Goodness
Posted by Kit Eaton at 8:50 PM on August 22, 2008
There's something about the simplicity of a skateboard that keeps designers coming back to revisit it... but the SoulArc board certainly seems a worthy reinvention. It's designed to make skateboarding feel more like surfing, with a huge leaf-spring mounted between its long deck and the wheels: And it's less unwieldy-looking than this previous effort. As you dig your heel in, the spring relaxes into corners, giving you more of a surfing-through-waves feeling. There's a video of the board in action after the gallery.
Looks like that suspension might let you take the SoulArc board into places you wouldn't think of taking a standard skateboard too. It's the invention of college student Mitch Mulder and Salvaore Vilardi, and it's due to go on sale soon, after being demoed at the Action Sports Retail show in San Diego. Price still to be decided. looks sweet and all, but I think I'll just stick with my bamboo Loaded longboard

@Collins1: gotta agree. carving style is similar to a long board. still it looks kinda sick.
but next thing i wanna do is riding one of those: [www.cube-savognin.ch]

Wow, another "surfing" emulator. This doesn't look like it skates any different than a standard longboard or even a carvboard. But wearing track shoes and doing an ollie is sick! haha

Pretty cool. I own a Flowboard by Sport Technology. The goal is the same, to get deep carves out of a skateboard, but the methods for achieving this are different. The Flowboard uses 14 wheels, 7 each end, to rock back and forth on. Really fun but not fast enough. The SoulArc looks like it may be a bit niftier because it won't lose speed when rolling onto still wheels. I'll have to check one out when they become a bit more readily available.

I guess you'd have to ride it to understand but the way he's riding it can be emulated by simply loosening your trucks and using a set of thick, soft riser pads.
Or if your going to ride like that, get a bamboo longboard.

It's too wobbly on top.
I don't have anywhere to attach the orange crate with wooden handles!
(hey I have to stay on the thing SOMEHOW)

Center of gravity looks a little high. The same feel can be achieved with a decent bamboo board and siesmic or revenge trucks...

I own a longboard, which is much more simple. While I doubt I can get as tight carves as this new board I bet I will have spent less money than they are going to charge for that.

Just more kooks making more kooky skateboards. Skateboarding should die again.

I'd love to get this. As a landlocked surfer, I'll do anything to simulate that surfing feel. I'll look into the other suggestions but this one looks like a winner.

Makes me wish I knew how to board. Oh well, back to my boring bicycle. *sobs*

it looks pretty sweet, I ride a Sector 9 Bamboo board and if i loosen my trucks enough I could achieve nearly pinpoint turns "carves". It can turn on a dime, but that runs the risk of you getting launched off your board into a head first pavement dive.
I think what these guys are really trying to market is the water like feel, rather than the serious carving cause otherwise it's just another glorified longboard. Or similar to what's mentioned above the 14 wheel wanna-be-snowboarding-in-the-summertime kinda thing.
I'd like to give it a go, but pavement isn't as forgiving as snow or water. Not to say that either couldn't give you a wicked nasty injury.

adding even more insult to injury, my first day back at work reveals that my brand new krooked zip-zinger 78a 58mm wheels-of-my-dreams have arrived via mail.

I'm going to have to check the video later, but one caveat right off the bat is the higher center of gravity.
on a related note, i just broke my friggin fibula skateboarding calmly down the sidewalk on sunday. after 12 years and probably 2,000 miles of skateboarding with no broken bones, a quick jaunt down the sidewalk does me in.

I've always been fond of the FreeBord for a more snowboarding/surfing feel to skateboarding.

@jhilla: I think you've really nailed it with your comment about creating a "water like" feeling. I think this is the real difference with this board. The carving isn't all that different than other boards with standard truck and board setups. With a fiberglass board or other flexing decks you will get a similar spring like resistance at the peak of your carves. The only other difference I would say is this seems like a carving board that you can ollie on which you can't really do with longboards and most other carvers.
@weatherman: The FreeBord is freaking awesome. Its a totally different beast. More of a cross-trainer for snowboarding. With its caster wheels and over sized hangers the range of motion achieved is incredible. Full lateral motion that pretty much simulates snowboarding on pavement. Those guys are geniuses.
The more unwieldy Carver trucks mentioned in the post don't seem that unwieldy, rather really fucking amazing for true surf-style skating. Unlike the other downhill setups those allow you to do a cutback kind of maneuver that you can't do with a normal skateboard and definitely not with the SoulArc. But you won't feel like you're floating with Carver trucks.
Basically it would be great to have 'em all for their different areas of expertise. I dig the handle on the SoulArc.
Anyone ever try that BMW skateboard?

yea it is pretty sick but nothing could compare to the thrill of droping in on a right with the offshore wind hitting you in the face and wipen out on a narly set... but this board would seem like alot of fun with no waves around good buy in my opinion - Drock

The designer is my brother-in-law. His wife was a "non-boarder" until her husband made this board. The ride is so much smoother than a regular longboard. The feel of riding on water is WAY better than the feel of riding on pavement. It's truly innovative.
