Sony's KDL-40ZX1, a 40-inch LCD HDTV Only 9.9mm Thin
Posted by Brian Lam at 4:16 PM on August 28, 2008
Sony Japan's ZX1 series 40-inch display is only 9.9mm thick at its narrowest, and 11.8kg. The display itself has only 1 HDMI port, while a wireless box can send the 120Hz, 1080p display up to 1080i images over a 5GHz channel many suspect is WHDM. That external port box will have 3 HDMI, 2 component, s-video, VGA, and even USB, mouse, and LAN port. All menus will be driven through an XMB Playstation-style crossmedia interface. Check out our hands-on of the skinny TV at IFA here. [Sony JP via Sony Insider]

Does this mean that the new ZX1 when playing a Blu-Ray 1080P movie through a PS3 will only display a 1080i picture and not a true 1080P? If so WHY?

@regnez:
you are supposed to be looking at the thinness of the display, not the specs and yellow-whites, and general dirtiness of the pic!

Meh, I'm calling BS. What's the point of a thin screen if it sits on a fat-ass base? Thin only matters if it's hanging on a wall or at least on a VESA mount. On a base, a 10mm screen has absolutely NO advantage over a 30mm screen.

I'd be afraid to even turn this thing on (without using the remote). :P
Very nice though, although the only reason I think TV's should be getting thinner is so that they can be mounted to a wall easier. I mean, after awhile (if you sit the TV on a surface), the TV stand is going to dwarf the actual TV when it comes to thickness. :D

Yes, not impressive at all - all they did was to decide to move the internal electronics to an external box....
...anyone who has ever opened a laptop or lcd tv to repair or service it knows that most panels ARE this flat natively...every modern television could be this flat if they all decided to move the junk electronics into an external box

Why are these things measured at their thinnest spot? I want to know how thick they actually are. Tell me how wide they are at their thickest.

@JoOngle:
the panels are flat...but if you want to actually see the picture in most displays, you need a backlight, which adds quite a bit to thickness.
This IS impressive b/c is requires NO backlight, which allows it to be thin.

Also, if you look at the Japanese page, they do have wall mounting available.

@jOongle
Its a totally different technology oled has a contrast ratio of 1 ,000,000,000 to 1 and is the thinnest of all tvs they put the extra components in a external box so it wouldnt get off balanced by the extra weight in the back and fall over
