Sony's Bravia Theatre RHT-G500 3.1-Channel Hi-Fi is a TV Stand Too
Posted by Kit Eaton at 6:08 PM on August 6, 2008
Stand your precious new HDTV on a simple, old-fashioned plank of wood? No, that's way too low-tech... or at least you might think so after seeing Sony's RHT-G500. It's an "invisible home cinema" TV stand. "A TV stand with a product code?" you might ask. Yes. And an integrated 3.1-channel audio system with S-Force PRO Front Surround technology, HDMI inputs with pass-through, a special PMP connector, and both Bluetooth and wi-fi connectivity. And you can stand TVs on it: it's designed for 32-inch to 40-inch sets. No word on pricing or availability. [Sony Europe via I4U]

Great idea, wait...what the... "32-inch to 40-inch sets"? Call me nutso, but I think Sony should upped their specs just a bit to support the 42" niche market.

Will it support a 200 lb. television? If so, I can put my behemoth CRT HDTV on it.
OMG! Ponies!

At CES2008 Sharp had on display their AN-ACS1U. It is also a TV stand with an integrated speaker/receiver. What I like best about the AN-ACS1U is that it features Sharp's 1bit technology.
Unfortunately, Sharps 1bit hasn't taken off with much success here in the US so much so that the people manning the booth for Sharp could not tell me any further information about the product.

@uhm...Bob: I'm sure you can fit a 42" on there, just Sony makes their TVs go from 40" to 46".
@HJTravels: Because to have anything more than 3.1 you would have to have surround speakers. It seems that this is made for people who don't want speakers around their room and don't want to embed speakers in their walls.

If Sony made one that my 55-inch SXRD would fit on, I'd probably buy one, in a heartbeat.
If it's under $1000....
