Sony ZX1 9.9mm-Thick TV Gives Me a Large Hadron Collider Right in My Pants
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:00 PM on August 28, 2008
I just had a hands-on and ears-on and pants-in with the Sony KDL-40ZX1, which I declare as the first official superdupercool product to come out at IFA 2008. The 9.9mm screen picture quality is really amazing, crisp, and ultra-light. The design, while it's not OLED thin, is the best I've seen on any TV so far, sleek, simple, and absolutely lickable. The best thing, however, is that this is not a prototype but a real product. The lighting technology is smart and surprisingly effective. Updated with expected price.
The good: they managed to get to this thickness thanks to a new LED lighting technology that is not behind the actual LCD, but on the four corners. Using some optical device, the powerful light from the corners gets distributed evenly through the whole screen. I couldn't appreciate any uneven lighting.
The bad: probably the price. On first hands on, however, I have no complaints. This feels like a true object of desire with anyone with the pockets to buy it.
Bottom line: Sony's really got a winner here, even while I imagine the price would be as out of this world as the TV itself. While last year we saw some comparable ultra-thin prototypes from the likes of Sharp, those are not going to be available until 2010. The thing that sets the Sony ZX1 is the fact that it's a real product that anyone with a big badass credit card could buy.
Update: According to IT Wire, the price of the Sony KDL-40ZX1 would be US$4,500.

@Samifumi:
Let's stay on topic okay? What does that PS3 backwards compatibility have to do with this TV?
I've already about $6000 on TVs for my place so I will have to wait for all these new guys for sure.

By the way...
Superthin? What's the attraction of a "superthin" LCD TV if only parts of the TV are "superthin?" Other parts of the TV (where the predominance of the components rest) demonstrate the same bulge as any sub $1500 40" 1080p LCD on the market. If it isn't "superthin" hanging on your wall (and you still have to use a TV stand), should one still find themselves attracted for $4500?

It doesn't give me a Hadron Collider, but I do feel some particle accelerator action going on here.

@mykalt45: What does that PS3 backwards compatibility have to do with this TV? It's a Sony product, and as a consumer, I am jaded with Sony and the direction of their business, and I am voicing my opinion on a gadget-focused message board about why I would not even consider a Sony product at this juncture based on their position on the PS3/PS2 backwards compatibility issue. Possibly, a Sony employee has come to this website to read the message board, and relay internally that there is somewhat of a backlash against Sony because of the PS3, and it's spilling over in quashing the consumers' desire for other Sony products. As consumers, we should really demand more of ourselves in voicing our displeasures at any opportunity we have.
By the way, for a discussion that you would consider "on-topic," you don't have to travel very far down the list of posting.

If the only reason this TV is so thin is because they 'shoved' all of the tech into a 'black box' on the back, then they should really take that into consideration when announcing how thin the TV it.
Over-exaggerating? Sony? Please... :]

I assume the top of the screen is 9.9mm? And the bottom part is twice as thick.
It's a bit misleading to say the TV is 9.9mm thick if this is the case....

@Mr. Diaz: I love the title. It's still really difficult to look at Hadron and not see hardon after previous comments in a previous LHC story.
Ok, maybe it's just me, but i think after we've gotten down to the width of most modern day LCD tvs, i don't really care if it gets smaller. As long as i don't have that giant electron gun shooting out the back of it -- making it impossible to fit your TV in any place of the room except the corner. A tv that i can mount on the wall is just as good as a slimmer tv that i can mount on the wall. All i'm interested in is quality.
...this tv does rock pretty hard though...

First off,
@Samifumi:
If you want to play PS2 games that bad, get a PS2. Sony has enough on their plate what with Home, online gameplay, exclusive launches, pricing and marketing. They'll deal with PS2 backwards compatibility at a time when it matters. Right now, not many people care. Why? Because 99% of the people that bought a PS3 had a PS2 and played through pretty much everything worth playing.
Second,
@Knirfie:
I agree. They should say 9.9 mm at thinnest point and 20 mm at thickest point.

So, you say that Sharp had prototypes of these but they aren't going to be out till next year and I read on Giz that Sharp is now making Sony's panels for them. Coincidence, I think not.

That'd go nicely on my 2-foot deep TV stand!
Who gives a $**t about how thin parts of a screen is? It's the kind of thing you'd show to a couple of friends after first buying it and then forget about. Give me higher contrast, wider gamut, etc. and forget about this superficial nonsense.

Nice... but the only part that is 9.9 mm is the actual screen.
What about the housing behind the screen. That's another 1/2" or more....?
Marketing gurus... an their PR bull. You can smell it a mile away.
Still a very nice set. How big is the screen/$? 40" @ $4500 ?

@grald: I have the original 60GB PS3. Hence, I have PS2 backwards compatibility. But what's chicken$hit should be called chicken$hit, and not for my sake, but for the sake of consumers who bought the PS3 later with the false impression (maybe from other PS3 buyers, or just the sheer confusion as a result of all the different models that have been available) it was backwards compatible with PS2 games. Not everyone keeps up with this as diligently as Gizmodo-visiting gadget freaks.

@Samifumi: You shouldn't be whining, since you had a chance to get the PS3 before they took out the chip for PS2 compatibility. Even I knew to get one and I don't like Sony... somewhat.

Most of the people I sell PS3's to on a daily basis don't give a rat's ass about b/c since they don't own PS2 games. Those who do have PS2 games already have a 60gb PS3. Or a PS2.
Moot point, get over it.

HMMMMMM I bought a LCD TV with the intention of wall mounting it.....then realised ...where do I put the DVD , etc . So a glass stand was the answer ..... SO a 9.9mm thick TV means nothing to me when it sits on a 18 inch deep glass stand

@Samifumi:
You are the silly type of mellow dramatic outraged consumer that makes me smile :)
First, do you really *need* PS2 backwards compatibility? If you have PS2 games I'm assuming you have a PS2. Still following? Therefore you probably have a PS2, RIGHT?
Second, I am going to make a wild guess and say you thought the PS3 was outrageously overpriced when it first dropped, like most people. People want the price of the PS3 to come down so sony cuts manufacturing costs by taking out the PS2 compatibility (and before you mention the software based emulation, it was shit to begin with. sony did us a favor by dropping software emulation). Now the price comes down, no doubt due to overall hardware prices dropping, but some of that can no doubt be attributed to cutting out the PS2 hardware, and people like you STILL BITCH.
Thirdly, who says it won't come back? I haven't read anywhere that sony said its gone forever. Like I said, the software emulation was shit. Only half the games were compatible. Maybe sony is fixing it and will roll it out in a firmware update. Maybe they aren't. Either way, basing buying a PS3 on PS2 compatibility is foolish when you consider how much the PS3 offers (its arguably the best bluray player on the market, plus a lot more).

@Samifumi: As a consumer of a Sony PS3 that is backwards compatible, all I have to say is that this TV along with my PS3 are excellent products. Honestly though, backwards compatibility was the least of my concerns when buying a PS3. I still have my PS2, which I plan on keeping...

Not to be a PS3 fanboy or anything but it's not like the XBOX 360 has real backwards compatibility for original XBOX games. I had to get rid of 20 core games for the XBOX because of that little hiccup. They shouldn't have to keep something in a system that adds to it's loss value for the company so it can keep people that want to play Kingdom Hearts 2 again and they don't want to keep their old PS2 hooked up. That's not their problem, it's yours. They followed where the market took the industry. After setting a standard with the PS2 with full backwards compatibility to PS games, they defaulted to the 360's standard to not care about a prior system. Since the PS3 is already a mega-deal as it plays and can run Blu-Ray discs and games, it had to take out some items. Sure it's an inconvienence but it is what it is. Don't bash Sony though for trying to keep their product competitive. Go get a Wii, it is fully backwards compatible with the Gamecube and all it's 11 games.
OH...and that TV is really really nice. Hope that was on topic enough for you guys.
