Sony Plans 10-Year Shelf Life For Current Generation PSP
Posted by Jason Chen at 2:00 AM on August 15, 2008
We were semi-surprised that the PSP hardware update contained so few external changes, but now that we've seen Sony's plan for the system, it all makes sense. Their ten year shelf-life plan for the PS2 and PS3 apparently also applies to the PSP platform, which according to them, "[does] not have a planned obsolescence strategy." Good news for current PSP owners since they won't have to upgrade their units for another three to four years at least. [Gama Sutra via Kotaku]

@hanspecans: Yes, the platform's continued and, it is anticipated, lengthy commercial viability is a perfect reason for them to discontinue it. That'll go over well with the existing customer base.

that is so beyond ridiculous. they might as well just wave white flag but then again that might be too much effort.

Too bad the release list for games make the future of the PSP look awful and the multimedia features on the system are worse than the ones on my cellphone.
I'm a sad PSP owner cause the system never reached its potential, and is now outdated.

no you're misunderstanding me.
i'm saying the 10 year shelf life is ridiculous and that it's out of conceit and laziness.
i love my PSP but it is a severely flawed system and needs a major hardware upgrade asap let alone 5 years from now.

@robpruitt: Do you mean 1.5? Any PSP Phat can be downgraded to run 1.0 or 1.5 quite easily. I was running 1.5 on mine for several years until I went up to a CFW just a few weeks ago.

The problem has been and always likely will be with the Sony software. Has anyone ever tried to put a memory stick video on this thing without thrid party software? Ok.. Create folder ZmXc and place it into KDMFZ4...its stupid. All I want that the PSP doesn't have is more freedom to do what I want with the thing. To make things worse every new issuance of software limits you more while throwing in token features like... Skype which would be great if anyone I knew had a microphone for PSP. Do you have a PSP with original 1.0 or 1.3 Firmware? It will sell for bundle.

@Kamalot: Your phone has better than a 480x272 screen, and plays back DVD-quality video?
That's pretty damn awesome. Who makes it?

I have been trying to downgrade mine forever. Happen to have a handy link or recourse for this?

They prbably can extend this for 7 more years. I'm sure they will make incremental upgrades such as better screens and even a Blu-ray UMD which would have about 2X the capacity of a DVD!

@robpruitt: If you have a friend who runs a custom firmware, tell em to fallow the tutorial to make a pandoras battery (just make sure its a fat PSP) and a magic memory stick.

@hanspecans: Nobody's saying there won't be a new portable from Sony in the near future. Recall that half of the "ten-year lifespans" of the PS and the PS2 were spent in their respective successors' shadows.

Well if just sitting on store shelves unsold for ten years counts as shelf life then they are well on their way! The wat these things are "selling" I don't think most stores will even have to re-stock their current supply to last that long.

@: Actually, the PSP have been outselling in Japan. It has even picked up steam here in the U.S. since the re-design.

I actually don't see the problem with this. The hardware in it far surpasses that of the DS, and seeing as how that's it's only competitor Sony can afford to do that (even though DS sales are high). Look at games like God of War: Chains of Olympus. They look phenomenal on the PSP, plus look at all the other features the PSP has.

I would gladly replace my current PSP for one with a second analog stick.

@anfauglir:
Agree on the 2nd analog stick. Looks like my cfw PSP Slim investment is going to be around for a while :-)
Also, I hate to sound like an Apple fanboy -- because I love my iPhone but I thought 'iPhone as gaming platform is a load of horse s***'. But, the more games I see the more I go hmmm, the iPhone might be the 300lb gorilla that sneaks over to the PSP's back yard and kicks it in the nuts.

@Kamalot: what the fuck are you on ?? No one made you buy and keep a psp , go back to you imaginary cellphone that has a large screen 4.3 and 480x272 screen, and plays GTA and also can stream off a ps3.
