Sony Makes PSP-3000 Official
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:35 AM on August 21, 2008
We knew the PSP-3000 was on the way, but now Sony has made it official. We don't have a full spec sheet yet, but the big two updates are going to be a new, brighter screen ("highest-level contrast ratio, response time, and wider colour gamut possible on a portable LCD screen" Sony claims) and an integrated microphone (making those impromptu Skype chats a whole lot more practical). No word on US release yet, but the PSP-3000 will be available in Europe on October 15th for €199. Hopefully we'll have a better picture for you soon, but it looks a lot like the existing PSPs. scriptgalleryPost("psp3000", 6, "");UPDATE: It's coming to the US on Oct 14, and it will hit with a new pack, click through for the update: [Kotaku]
The PSP 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack includes:
— Updated Piano Black PSP system
— 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo — Store more photos, music, videos,
downloadable games and game saves.
— Everyday Shooter PLAYSTATION Network voucher* — A colourful and
music-driven arcade shooter, Everyday Shooter won three awards at the
Independent Gaming Festival at the 2007 Game Developers Conference.
Unlike traditional arcade shooters, in Everyday Shooter each on-screen
interaction is a note, chord, or riff that plays in harmony with each
level's unique music track. The title is available for PLAYSTATION(R)3
and will be making its debut for PSP. Download Everyday Shooter for
PSP from PLAYSTATION Store to your Memory Stick PRO Duo with the
included voucher.

Excellent! i like the new shape...i can kinda see how its more curved around the edges. AND FINALLY! A MIC! I hated the fact to accturlly use skype i needed an extra part for it, it was a bit unpractical to have skype without the psp haveing a mic. I hope i have enough to get it :P

I think the current screen is bright enough. Brighter means more power consumption and less playtime.

Ahhh! I just bought a PSP last week. So this is just a design update? PSP Slim's shouldn't be obsolete right?

I wonder if it will be an improvement over the slim?

"brighter screen (for gaming in sunlight, which is currently impossible)"
For some reason that made me laugh really hard...

Is it going to come with a data dock port? That's the single thing I'm wishing for most on my PSP. Well, that and a transflective display so that I could actually use the damn thing outside.

The last revision, the Slim and Lite, had model numbers in the range 2000-2999. The original run was model numbers 1000-1999. It's similar on the PS, PS2, and PS3, except in those cases it's 10,000-19,999 etc. etc.

@MarkB: My thoughts exactly. Hmm, maybe the PSP 5000 will have it?
Wait... can anyone remind me why this is called the PSP 3000 again? On second thought... Who cares.

So...choice is no good? You can always turn DOWN the brightness. Having more options is always a good thing. Being ABLE to play outside is also a good thing.

doesnt look like there is really that much of an improvement over the other ones. Priority number one should be louder speakers, than all the other stuff. If you already have a psp, I dont think there is a good enough reason to upgrade.

Okay. How many people actually use Skype on the PSP? I want to see some numbers and data on the usage of Skype coming from the PSP. Hardly anything I bet.
So now that the PSP gets a mic, it can finally get in on the blowing/shouting action that some DS games have gotten right? Whoopee.
They changed the Home button to the PS button.. Hoooray.
Honestly. My PSP1000 is still kicking it. With CFW, the 4th level of brightness is unlocked.
More COLORS? We need even more hues of brown and gray? OH sweet.
The only thing that is good is the 4GB stick. And I already have one.

@MarkB: EXACTLY! It looks like there is plenty of room on the other side for another stick. I still can't figure out why they left it out of the other models.
Now I am kinda glad I didn't grab the God of War version. I just wait for this one to upgrade my phat model. or wait 3 months for the 4000... Maybe THAT one will have dual sticks!

If only it could also be a UMPC too!
And like the Xbox 360 zune computer phone! It has the two extra swivel gamer pad joy sticks, that's turned into a zune styled 360 degree 3-d gamer functions for their system!
I can't wait until Sony developes the same thing, just like everything else that I've mentioned too!
But, I like PSP's 3000's color choice!
ciao.

Wtf? still only 1 joystick? CRAP!! i've got the phat model and the slim model, and I will not be buying another unless, A) they make a gta game that will only work on the new psp, or B)give me a second joystick for those anoying games that expect me to use the x,o,^, and square button as a joystick.

PSP-4000 will probably have an integrated webcam.
I always welcome a new screen, but most people turn down the brightness to save battery life anyways.
4gb included is a nice step from the 1gb value pack some years ago, though.

How much do you want to bet it'll ignore the service mode (aka Pandora) on a modified battery?
The slim is good enough for most people. Stock up people, this will likely be sweeping the old ones out and putting homebrew (or ISO'ed games if you roll that way) out to pasture, at least for a while...

@beyondthetech: Dark Alex has broken every PSP so far and allowed CFW to be installed. It's only a matter of how fast he can get his hands on the unit and do his thing.

@JEmlay: I guess so if you're talking about someone new to the platform, but for those of us who already have one and are on the Dark Alex firmware, not a chance would I trade that for a brighter screen and another $200. That would be the dumbest trade.

A camera or camera attachment would be nice. The 4GB card is nice. Will it have a longer lasting battery or will we still have to pony up $50 for the big battery. I have a 1000 and I didn't think the Slim was a big enough upgrade to replace it.

@MarkB, SkoGoody, Mr.SithNinja, snoop-blog: Seriously, how hard is this for people to understand? Adding a second analog stick would require a COMPLETE redesign of the PSP. As it is now, the power supply and battery are where the second analog would go. Besides, with how the PSP is now, adding a second analog stick would make thing more uncomfortable to hold than it already is.
What I want them to do is move the power switch to where I won't accidentally hit it when playing a game.

@JEmlay: Of the 10 or so people that I know with PSP's (including a few that are 15 and under) at least 7 of them are h4x0red. Just look at the numbers (systems sold vs. software sold) and you'll see that there's probably a lot more than 1%. Now that Sony can't defeat the hackability of the PSP that number will likely grow as even people with the newest hardware and newest firmware can still easily hack without much effort.
wiggatron
JEmlay
Posted 7:37 AM 23/8/08
@wiggatron:
No way. Just because h4x0r3s run together doesn't mean you can inflate the numbers.
~current PSP owners = 37.5 million. 1% of that is 375,000. That amount or more is highly unlikely.
