Sony Ericsson's T700 Succeeds the Venerable T610
Posted by Jason Chen at 1:19 AM on August 8, 2008
It took half a decade, but the T700 is Sony Ericsson's attempt at finally releasing a successor to one of our old favourites, the T610. The T700 has a 3.2-megapixel camera, stereo speakers, a "premium metal finish", 2-inch TFT display, 512MB storage (with expandable storage), quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA 3G. Release date's set some time in Q4 2008, and will come in black/silver, black/red, and just plain silver. For those who owned a T610 a few years ago, this will be both sweetly nostalgic and deeply confusing, when you look down and see that your T610 has a camera that can take photos that aren't mistaken for abstract paintings. Add me to the list of T616 (AT&T) lovers. It was my favorite phone until I got an iPhone. I briefly moved to a W810i before getting an iPhone, but it was too busy trying to be a Walkman and didn't have the subtle appeal of the T616,

My ex had a T616 for AT&T...
...before she decided to "upgrade" (and I use that term loosely) to a Razr...

@Kaiser-Machead's BSDM Shenanigans:
It's the new layout of the keys.
It can be seen on most of SE's new phones.

@weatherman: 640x480 may have been what it said on paper, but it sure as heck wasn't what it looked like. It was so grainy, it looked like a mosaic. But the one thing about these SE's that I love is that for those who like to use it as a point n' shoot often, and use it for music can just transfer via bluetooth instead of USB, which I do on my Macbook often. The newer ones take really decent video and I can email them to people. After owning a couple of SE's for a while, I'm hooked on them, but I'm just a nitpicky purist so I'm balking at the button layout :P

Ooh, that looks nice. T610 was my first cell phone, so it holds a special place in my heart... or trash can... can't remember what I did with it, actually.

I really liked my T610 (except for the "camera")
This is interesting, but I'm pretty sure that my next phone will only have one button on the front panel & a significatly larger screen.

The T610 was definitely one of my favorite phones, and this improves on it in every way. That 3.2MP camera sounds real nice. I think the T610 had 640x480. I'm not sure about that keyboard layout, but I suppose that sacrifices have to be made to keep the overall unit small (the real advantage of this) and screen relatively large.

@Razta: It's a Sony Ericsson, so most likely yes. On a more pleasant note, it will likely be available unlocked.

Will it come to the USA? And will it cost more than an IPhone?

I see two things terribly wrong. There's a pair of dedicated keys for call and end call, and I see that the backtrack button (sort of like a U turn symbol on the left) has been replaced by what appears to be a mail button. Ugh, it probably uses the C to go back through the menu :( I guess I'll be holding onto my W810i a great deal longer than I suppose.

I'm not all that familiar with the network bands, but any chance that this might be usable for Verizon? Most, if not all SE phones, can't be used on Verizon, which really sucks...

@KBeat: The only thing about the W810i that I don't like is that it no longer has a quick menu to turn off connectivity like BT and IR, and a quick access to silent like the T610 had. The walkman part isn't so bad, and thankfully is out of the way, save for the branding all over it.

looks like a touched up w890i. only noticeable change seems to be that you can access the mem stick w/o removing the battery cover. still looks like a good phone, just not for those of us who already have the 890.

@Kaiser-Machead's BSDM Shenanigans: You're right. It's just not a true T610 replacement without the dedicated return key (the "U" key you called it). Any self respecting T610 user would be lost without that key!

@mobilehavoc: It's the same situation with the Walkman phones. None of them have a headphone jack, just an adapter so you can hook in standard earphones. The adapters are cheap and can be purchased off of ebay, unless this one uses a new proprietary plug that will be hard to find (again).

If only this thing had US 3G. Also I don't see a headphone jack anywhere so I guess no easy way to listen to music on this? At least without an adapter or A2DP?
I was one of the first people in the US to get the T610 - it came from a distributor in Sweden or somewhere...it was nuts back then. Shortly after got the T616 for the 850mhz and it had also less bugs (anybody remember the BT static and other T610 bugs?).

haha sweet. the t610 was the first cell phone i had all to my own, back in high school right when it came out. it got me simulatenously hooked on sony ericsson phones and familiar with their infamous joysticks that always start to give out after a year or two. since had a k750i and until yesterday when i got an iphone, i had the k800i. hopefully my iphone can tide me over until the Xperia comes out

@Kaiser-Machead's BSDM Shenanigans: I don't think it's a mail button; I think that's the "Activity" button like on the right of your W810i.

What, no red LED in the joystick? Pffft!
@weatherman: @Kaiser-Machead's BSDM Shenanigans: Not even 640x480! 352x244, I believe. For some reason, the sensor on mine would get confused by anything bright blue and render it as pink.

i <3 my w610i. no dedicated call/end call keys. it confuses the hell out of my g/f. in the process of hanging up a call she accidentally hits the walkman button and the room is filled by sufjan stevens.
awesome.

I had an old SE T68 and then a T637 and they were my favourite phones. It's nice to see SE finally embracing thinness in their phones. I'd love to pick up a T700.

Looks like I might have finally found something to replace my T610! Can you believe the T610 was the first cellphone I owned by myself? And I still use it?
I must be a really bad gadget-geek.
So it's going to be either this or the so called Xperia... Either way Sony Ericsson is my way to go. Their UI is unbeatable.

Wow, I'm surprised by all the T610 lovin' goin' on up in here! Not that I disagree, of course. My wife and I both had one and we hated having to give them up because we moved to a place where our carrier didn't exist. I still miss that phone.

I had the older T68i.
Loved that phone. But the cord that charged the phone absolutely sucked.
Towrds the end of my contract with that phone, I literally had to hang it upside down,to get the damn thing to even charge.
Right now, I'm loving my Blackberry 8830 too much to even consider another phone.
