Sony Earphones Make Attractive, Useless Subway Maps
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 11:45 AM on August 25, 2008
In order to prove how far Sony has come since ATRAC3 and long-playing MiniDiscs, a new ad attributed to the company shows a NYC subway map traced in its entirety by black Sony earphones, accompanied by a Network Walkman. As if it wasn't enough to try to retake ownership just one iPod-saturated public transit system, a search revealed similar designs for both the London Underground and Sydney's Metro. That last one makes sense, since Sony retained the Sydney office of badass ad agency Saatchi and—repetition is key to messaging—Saatchi for the inspired work. One prob though: As any seasoned straphanger will tell you, you kinda need the colours, or else all the lines run together. [The Cool Hunter]

I have two minidiscs - great for recording practice sessions and rehearsals.

Sydney doesn't really have a metro...it's more of a commuter rail service.

Cute but ultimately useless.
If only Sony hadn't squandered the billion-dollar brand name synonymous with portable music that they could have leveraged against the iPod.

As someone who lives in Sydney, I wish it was possible to draw a Sydney Metro map with earphones, because that would mean we had one. Instead all we have is commuter rail, as mentioned by Brillemeister.
Oh, and a single tram line which goes to the casino.

@NeoXY: @MagnoliaBoy: A couple years back I bought an MD player for 35 bucks, and it really was a fantastic little device. MD simple burn was terrific and easy, except that I preferred to have the track names display instead of "Track 1" and so on. It had a 30 hour battery life and had replaceable batteries, and was actually a pretty rugged little doodad. I'm sometimes tempted to get another one just to have the gadget, but I'm trying to be good and keeping my gizmo pool streamlined and.......
Fuck it. I'm buying one.

I don't know as they're going to beat the iPod, but... I do like their headphones. I don't care if I have to replace them every 4 months, I love that pair they make that clips over your ears.

Sony's earbuds are still about the only thing they make that I'll still buy.
I love 'em.

I think its a cool way of advertising, assuming the maps weren't intended to be functional.

yup.
Here's the NYC subway social strata based on the MP3 player they use:
subway super yuppie, rich hipster=Ipod Touch/ Iphone
subway cool student, regular hipster or not so super yuppie=Ipod nano
subway blue collar=Sansa, older Ipod, something else
Now- which cathegory would most people want to be associated with?
(I have a Sansa).

Not sure if Sony can do that in Oz, given that I was recently threatened by Sydney's Rail company over my iPhone application's use of imagery of the network. Or maybe it doesn't count if you've got money.
