Sony Discontinues PSP Extended Battery Pack
Posted by Jason Chen at 2:30 AM on August 10, 2008
PSP Fanboy just learned that Sony's discontinuing their 2200mAh PSP battery pack, an official aftermarket addon that would allow you to game for up to 12 hours or so. What's the deal? We're not sure, but someone from Sony said they're looking at other ways to "service the consumer," which might say to us that they're looking at ways to extend battery life without making the back of the PSP bulge out in an unseemly manner. And just when we learned how to hack your PSP for homebrew apps too. [PSP Fanboy]

Yes, it will work with pandora (I did it to mine just the other night actually :)). That does seem like a likely conjecture, although with all of the third party jig kick batteries out there, I'm not sure I see the point. As for not using the battery to go into a service mode, I'm not sure that's practical. Sony needs a way to fix fried PSPs and that way is the service mode which allows you to run an OS off of the memory stick (as opposed to the NAND bios). Taking that ability away would cause a customer service nightmare (they'd have to replace all of the legitimately bricked psps that came in). However, the newer motherboards have been changed to not allow the creation of a jig kick battery, so they're still fighting.

I wonder if this has something to do with the pandora battery. I mean, this extended battery works w/ the pandora battery, right?
Maybe they're looking for ways to prevent the homebrew community from using the battery to facilitate the custom firmware process.
I could be wrong though. I dunno, i used my original psp battery to create a pandora battery for my slim.

"official aftermarket addon"? It's either official or aftermarket...

@outie: not quite
After-market refers to any market where the customers who implement one product or service are likely to purchase a related, follow-on product.

I'd say they're probably just getting too expensive to produce compared to actual sales. Even if people were buying these to HAxx0R their PSPs, Sony would rather have them do that then use a third party tool battery. Sony has acknowledged that one of the reasons the psp sells is for homebrew, and they appreciate that it's moving units.

I can see several ways for them to "service" the consumer.

Really, I feel as if the PSP is becoming more and more useless. Especially with the PS3 out and new consoles like the Xbox360, it feels like Sony have just abandoned the hand held market and left old sub-standard technology with it. I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped making PSP games soon aswell.

I never saw this as an "extended" life battery but rather as a REPLACEMENT batter as I had to buy one when my original battery died. What are they not going to have off the shelf replacement batteries for when they die?
I picture this add-on as a battery pack with a wire that you plug into the power jack.

@Aristeia: Actually, many of the new batteries won't work into Pandora. The best Pandoras are the old PSP1 batteries.

One word HOMEBREW, Sony is trying people from Pandora-izing their PSPs. You know all you have to do is go down to Canal street and theres a guy that'll do it for you.

I doubt discontinuing this battery will make much of a difference to the home brewers. Even if they change all their batteries, you could still order a service mode battery, or service mode tool that could soft mod any psp battery into a service mode battery and back again, both only cost about 20 bucks.
