Software Pirates Fined Four Brazillion Dollars
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 8:00 PM on August 7, 2008
If you thought those greedy mom-assaulting vampires from the RIAA or the BSA were bad, you haven't seen their Brazilian cousins yet: they sued a shopping mall and its retailers for selling pirated software to the tune of four billion dollars, winning every single cent of it. Nothing bad with that, until they tell you how they came up with that crazy sum.
The Associação Brasileira das Empresas de Software (the Brazilian equivalent of the Business Software Association) sued the administrators of Stand Center--a shopping mall in Sao Paulo--and 17 of the retailers in there for seven brazillions (four billion US dollars). The sum was calculated by getting 103 products, adding the total value and multiplying it by 3,000, then putting that together with the individual street price of the 71,000 products that were seized during the police operation that lead to this court case.
For sure, crime doesn't pay. But with those outrageous quantities, fining won't either. [IDG NOW-- Thanks Ariel]

Cool, you know, i actually live only about 20 mins from StandCenter, used to love goin there. Tons of those chinese cheap stuff, tons of cameras brought by chinese people, everything so cheap!
Luckly, there are other places that sell stuff that i don't have to pay the import taxes...

I heard a story on NPR about the bootleggers on China. They were all complaining that there business has completely crapped out in the last year or so due to Chinese families getting high speed Internet. Apparently now you can download an episode of Lost already subtitled with Chinese about 30 minutes after it airs in the U.S.
Of course, that's got nothing to do with Brazil, but I thought it was interesting.

I am brazilian, and I'm totally, officially switching to "brazillions" (BZ$) when I refer to large sums of reais (R$ - how should we translate our currency name anyway? Royals? Reals? Royales? Beats me).
Americans should understand that us brazilians DO have a sense of humour, but when it comes to making fun of our country and its idiossincrasies, our huge inferiority complex makes it only ok if we do it ourselves. There's actually a TV spot that pokes fun on the issue airing right now.
I couldn't care any less, we deserve the shit we take most of the time, but most brazilians will get really pissed if you diss anything BR-related. It embarasses me to no end that people can't take a joke down here, nor make an effor to change or improve the object of said jokes.
If I could sell my sense of humour, I'd probably charge a couple brazillions for it.

@housermag: Some of my best customers are Brazilians, from Sao Paulo, and they are total hoots.
Anyways, it's rude to make fun of someone else's country when your own is so royally screwed up (Case in point: America).

@housermag: Sounds a lot like Canadians. Those loonies.
I don't understand that math at all. Is this statutory? Did some legislator just get bored and decide it in an afternoon? "Okay, multiply by four. Add in the price of cheese, no take the square root and multiply that by 100,000. Okay, no subtract out the distance from the store to the house of every purchaser...in centimeters. Now add the weight of each product. Plus 263,587.56. Okay, what do we have?"

In all seriousness all those Brazillions of dollars (rs rs rs) helps Brasil in future diplomatic negotiations. More developed countries always use lax international property rights as a club so now brasil can say 'hey! we're just as irrational about intellectual property rights as you are so start playing nice...' well with the exception of perscription drugs.

So the commanding general in Iraq goes to brief the president:
"Sir we have good news and bad news. The good news is attacks are down overall, but we did lose 3 Brazilian solders in the past 30 days."
And the president says.
"How many is a Brazillion?"

[@housermag] I must agree with you in some points, most people in here are too sensitive when others come mocking them, like that Simpsons episode where they come to Brazil.
I though it was one of the funniest ever, and it almost became a diplomacy issue, but what I just don't understand, is why the government people were complaining about, because it is ALL truth! Very exagerated and funny, but all truth.

Hi! I'm a Giz-reader but this post made me register for comments :)
I'm also Brazilian (claps now!)
@housermag: you just nailed with your oppinion.
All I have to say is: this is what happens when you hiper-tax about everything you can (or could) buy!
Its non-sense paying close to 150% more for imported goods... You end up buying from some 'amigo' to avoid taxes, including the taxes the 'amigo' are avoiding selling stuff on the street.
Unfortunately, down here, if you are a decent and honest citizen, paying all your taxes, you end up with a big fat debt, with a popular car and rented apartment. While 'other amigos' drive around in their mercedes, working 3 days a week.
It's such a temptation...

Ok, I get the "brazillion" joke... ;) But the brazillian law actually says that the "fine" (is that the right word) can be "up to" 3000 times the price of the illegal copy. (If I remember it correctly, that number comes from the estimated number of copies that can be sell of any book illegally printed - extended, any pirate copy of software.) The law says "up to" because in the brazillian law, the "finer" cannot cause the "finee" (sorry, I guess I am inventing word now) to bankrupt. What means that the sum will probably not be paid in its full amount, but will be an amount that can be actually paid (and actually exists :P). Maurício Piccini
