Six Fun Things to Do With Serious Military Hardware at a Russian Armaments Show
Posted by John Mahoney at 9:30 AM on August 26, 2008
The International Defence Exhibition of Land Forces went down in Moscow this past weekend, and it seems like it was a pretty a great time, judging from these photos sent in to our good friends at English Russia. First stop, obviously, is to strap on the Tevas and nautical print Hawaiian shirt for a quick sit in this bad-arse anti-aircraft (I think?) battery. And as you can imagine, that's not all the fun to be had for the whole family with all the heavy weapons around.

You could also have a refreshing break with a water bottle next to this Dok-Ing Croatian mine-sweeper.

Give the kids a chance to see what it's like to look down the firing sights of a shoulder-launched missile.

Or, better yet, the sights of this gigantic cannon.

Fondly stroke a grenade launcher, perhaps.

Or stand on the business end of some pretty demonic-looking UAVs on their launch sleds.
Plenty more fun to be had over at: [English Russia]

Other then the UAV's, everything is pretty dated. They've had that stuff for decades.

Is it better to be feared... or respected? I say: "Is it too much to ask for both?"

If I didn't see the Cyrillic, I'd say this could easily go down near the Crawford ranch.

The camo the guy is wearing looks like the old camo used by the US in Desert Storm.

Yikes those UAV's are horrible looking. I bet whomever designed them also worked on the TU-series of bombers and Hind copters.

@mruler360: Good eye! Those are environmentally friendly UAV's. Just run on foot directly into enemy territory with them and ZAM! Instant, low power consumption surveillance!

Funny how most of that stuff was originally made in the us. I am amazed how much Russia copies everyone. They copy nearly everything we make. I mean they didn't even make their first jet engine. It was a rolls royce clone!

I was about to buy one of those shoulder launched missiles but I only had $20 on me and I didn't want to give up Nachos I just ordered to close the deal. Its o.k. though because some sheik looking dude came and traded the lot for a silver watch.

I believe that "gigantic cannon" is actually a KORD heavy machine gun, mounted atop all modern Russian tanks. It's their equivalent to our M2 Browning machine gun, and way more awesome. Want.

I believe I've seen those UAVs on Russian TV being used in the second Chechen war. The nice thing about them is that they don't need any pavement to be launched, and they're cheap and tiny so in the unlikely event that one of them gets shot down (remember, they're tiny), they'll just launch a few more. It's also OK if it runs out of fuel. Just blow it up with a remote command.
