Scrapwood Electric Guitars Expose the Illusion of Rock
Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:36 PM on August 6, 2008
I'm not saying that we'll see Springsteen rocking a one-string, DIY electric guitar any time soon. But I'm pretty sure that he could if he wanted to, because these homemade guitars aren't too shabby--seeing as they were constructed in an afternoon by a group with little to no guitar crafting experience.
As for Springsteen, it would be worth sacrificing perfect intonation for one song, just to see the crazed look on Jesus' face in his blurry iPhone snapshots. [Core77]

Sounds like early Devo.
(And I approve.)

Why are none of these people willing to show their face? I feel like I'm watching some lame xtube video.

This reminds me of when i used to make guitars out of cigar boxes, rubber bands, and a piece of plywood. Sounded pretty much the same too. Could up the tension a little bit, tho.
A day's worth of practice and they'll be ripping out Dragonforce like smooth melted face toast.

Um, I mean, I guess those are guitars. With one string that sound like shit. Perhaps this would work better if everyone got high first.

@P3nnst8r has returned on the Graces of Brian Ashcraft: Cigar boxes and plywood? You were spoiled. I used empty tissue boxes.

@Fierock: It would take a lot of airflow to vibrate strings.

Someone should try combining a woodwind and a guitar, like a guitar-flute. Maybe it's already been done?

Not nearly as cool as Les Claypool's Whamola.

We're there really that many chicks there or did they just make sure to film the four they had?

@Fierock: You would still have to vibrate the strings. The pickup is just a microphone.

@Fierock: Then you'd probably have a vibration sounding hum in the background of all your music.
If the pickup moved up and down enough you'd possibly get a loudness change with it getting louder as the pickup got close to the string and softer as it moved away, but just vibrating isn't going to move it enough to make a difference. It will just create background noise.

@Fierock: nevermind stupid idea cause then you can't vary the frequency with strings.

@GeekyNerdGuy: what if you vibrate the pickup?

Yea, despite the intricacies of being a musical instrument, the science behind an electric guitar is pretty simple. I got an A on an induction presentation in a Physics class by hooking my guitar up to an oscilloscope, and explaining the magic(aka science) behind it.
I later built an electric guitar...the woodworking is the hard part, the electronics are easy, so needless to say, it looks crappy, but it rocks.

The girlishness hiding deep inside me has to come out sometimes... and that chick's 1984-era pastel dress is just god-awful. It's ugly if you're being serious, and if you're trying to be an ironic hipster, then it's even worse. If I thought they were ugly when I was a toddler, that sentiment hasn't changed one bit since.

OMG! It's Modest Mouse!
All you really need for an electric guitar is a pick-up and some strings. The rest doesn't really matter. I once built an electric back in the 90's with a friend of mine that was mostly duct tape.
