Rumour: The Dark Knight Could Coax Warner into BD-Live Release
Posted by Mark Wilson at 3:00 AM on August 8, 2008
Warner Bros, along with plenty others, have been sceptical about BD-Live. WTF is BD-Live, you ask? It's that feature in the Blu-ray spec allowing, among other internet-based functionality, people seated on couches across the US to watch movies simultaneously and chat about them. Now rumour has it that the company is considering The Dark Knight as their first BD-Live disc release for the coming holiday season. We can't wait for two and a half straight hours of:
Jason Chen: I'm Batman!
Mark Wilson: I'm Batman!
Jesus Diaz: I'm Batman!
Matt Buchanan: I'm Batman!
John Mahoney: I'm not that guy from Frasier! [DVDTown Thanks Eric!]

Sorry again. I've just been told that Larry King isn't dead either. He's also just really really old.
Maybe they should die.

I'm sorry. I've just been told that Jack Nicholson is not dead. He's just old. I had him confused with Larry King, who has been dead for years.

@phor11: Hopefully they let the character die with him. Anyone else would be a let down even if they do a good job because everyone will compare them to Heath's portrayal.

I think if you talk during the movie the Blu-Ray player should destroy your disc and tell you to return the player, because you don't deserve to watch movies.

Wait, something was preventing people from doing this before? Did someone from the MPAA come to your door and punch you in the face if you tried to do it previously, or something?
I mean, is hitting play simultaneously really that hard? That it required undoubtedly thousands of lines of code, and part of a major specification to fix?

I don't see the similarity between a playing card, a campaign button and an oblong sharpened bat shuriken...
Could we add Alfred holding up a protein shake?
Or Lucius Fox holding up a set of car keys?

"you don't deserve to watch movies"
Right on. "watch " is the active principal here.
The only thing more annoying than trying to endure someone chatting about a movie while watching it is if they had a changer and paused it to do so.
Bad idea... "Let her go !"

BD-Live is not "letting you watch the movie with other people over the internet" --- it's Blu-Ray's enhanced Java interactivity layer, similar to Microsoft's iHD that HD DVD had.
iHD, however, proved to be much easier to work with, that's why some titles had a lot of interactivity on HD DVD but had nothing of the sort on their BD counterparts. Heck, BD-Live wasn't even finalized until just a short while ago.

I'm sorry, I just invested a great deal on DTS HD system, with optical, a PITA but awesome VGA quad HD setup, and your telling me I WANT to interrupt my cinematic experience? Ok, I can only think of two scenarios. One I'm with this spicy hot Costarricensa and shes making me watch a chick flick. But that wouldn't work, she would see my attempts to escape her attention. Other situation is for popcorn, and the bathroom. I don't watch movies with long periods of nothing that allows me to partake in such a useless activity; El Chupacabra was the exception, but those 54 seconds of that no-name rapper Trey and some scientist walking towards the camera from 200 yards away was SO BAD IT WAS AWESOME. El Chupacabra, is the best worst movie I've ever seen. From the cast messing up the main character's name(Navarro?!) and showing the filming crew in part of SEVERAL shots, maybe you should give me BD-live for that movie, I can talk to my friends about how funny it is they are in an industrial building being chased by a goat rapist which is actually a midget in a gorilla suit with fangs, and then the main character's leap through a heavy round wooden door and all of a sudden are in a medieval dungeon with a road flare. Then they go back out the door and viola industrial complex. WTF?

@phor11: Do a Google image search for Joseph Gordon Levitt. My vote is for him simply because he looks uncannily like Ledger. And he's a decent actor as well. Just needs to gain a few pounds and I think he would do fine (if they even decide to replace Ledger at all. I think they have to...The Joker is way too important to the Batman franchise to get rid of simply because Ledger died."

Ok, just to clear things up. There are essentially an unlimited number of things that can be done with BD-Live, not just "chatting". They can do things like downloadable updates(movie trailers, subtitles, special features), Live commentary, online games, just to name a few. And not all of these features need to be done during the movie either. Maybe I'm not in the norm, but I think there is a lot of potential for BD-Live, and that people will just need to give it time. Also, BD-Live hasn't been available so far, because 95% of Blu-ray players on the market didn't support it. Maybe the first few discs with BD-live content on them might seem like crap, but eventually I think it is going to be really cool. Just my opinion.
