Rumour: New Dual-Touchscreen Nintendo DS in Early '09
Posted by John Mahoney at 1:00 AM on August 28, 2008
This is on the rumour-ier side, but Brian from Kotaku's man deep, deep in Japan has dropped him a tidbit about a new DS that might be in the works--one that bumps up screen sizes and finally replaces the top screen with a touch screen. The Nintendo DT, perhaps? Anyway, this certainly won't be hitting before Christmas, as Kotaku's source says "early next year" if true, which means a lot of DS-gifted kids' smiles may quickly turn to frowns in '09. It makes sense, given Nintendo's excitement-free showing at E3 this year, and how far touchscreen tech has come since the DS first hit, that something DS-related will be brewing for early 2009. @Canthros: Trauma Center and The World Ends with You did a decent job it making it central. The Pokemon menus in battle, etc. use it such that doesn't get in your way if you choose not to use it, but helps if you do.
I rather liked the Kirby game (Canvas Curse?), too, and I think that having touch controls for strategy games would be great, too (amazingly enough, I haven't played any strat games for the DS yet. Looking forward to Disgaea).

DT. Heh.
I'd love them to try and sell that epic fail of a brand.

@smartboydan needs to stop watching the Watchmen trailer: Buy one of the used units, then. ISTR that 1st gen DS goes for something like $80 at the far outside. Something similar should happen to the current production DS Lite if/when an upgrade is made available. (It may already have happened, actually, as I don't track prices on this sort of thing regularly.)

My experience with the DS has thus far suggested that most touchscreen gameplay is fairly uninspired. (Are there any games that make use of the touchscreen in a way that isn't gimmicky, distracting, or unnecessary?)
I do like having the second screen as a display for things like maps, status and inventory or other displays, but I really don't find the addition of a second touchscreen exciting.

Hmm, would this make it more expensive and/or prolong the current price point? I can't really afford a DS until it drops below $100. Damn tution...

I hope the redesign the whole device. It looks like it's from the mid-90's.

@Reilaos~: I played through TWEWY and, while I thought they made nice use of the touchscreen, I never got the feeling that they were really doing anything with it that couldn't have been accomplished better some other way. (This may be because it's too difficult to keep track of the bottom screen if you're doing anything significant on the top screen, and vice-versa. You don't really need two control schemes, you need the ability to switch control focus between characters.) It was a nice attempt, but not quite a success; the limitations of the touchscreen input didn't make the control schema robust enough to be much better than a conventional scheme using buttons could have been (shoulder buttons to switch pins, D-pad for movement, buttons for activating the psych or switching targets and so on), and having to switch focus back and forth between screens made life difficult.

I think the DS is primarily responsible for the mass consumer adoption of touchscreens. It didn't invent the touchscreen, but made it fad.

@smartboydan needs to stop watching the Watchmen trailer: Haha, as it turns out my student loan is getting me a DS next week and a PSP, I'm getting the R4 and I already have a pandora battery, thank you Canada and OSAP.
@Canthros: Yeah, Trauma Center is Good, Pokemon Ranger, Warioware Touched, etc. I am also looking Forward to Disgaea.

The reason why the top-screen is not touch sensitive is because its hard to reach during gameplay not very convenient. Also, because the top screen on a swivel it'll be moved back every time you touch it.
What may be more realistic is having two larger screens with the bottom being multi-touc sensitive.

Dual touch screens is an interesting idea, but not really needed. Most my favorite DS games (with the exception of Warioware) don't use it much at all. I think touch screens are nice for inventory control so you can just touch what you want to use in a game, but that's really about it. I'd rather see Nintendo try a new idea all together, rather than just adding another touch screen.

@MichelleDatsun: Yeah. Maybe just drop the upper screen and I'd buy it. 'Cause then it would be the Gameboy I always wished for.

Instead, Nintendo should make the Wiimotes work with the DS. ^_^

Look at Nintendo compared to Apple.
Look at the MacBook. Look at the DS Lite.
Look at the Power Mac G4 Cube. Look at the GameCube.
Look at the iMac (5 Flavors). Look at the Neon Nintendo 64.
What I'm saying is, i hope they come out with a "DS Slim" as an awnser to Apple's "MacBook Air"

The DS is a pedophile! It wants to be touched by children! And now even at two spots!!
To be honest, the touch screen is what keeping off of buying a DS. For me "palm pilot"-controls are no gaming controls.
