Retromodo: 'Sun Lamp Held In Hand Brands Babies'
Posted by Jason Chen at 10:00 AM on August 7, 2008
Medgadget found this 1938 issue of Popular Science with a really, really fun baby branding gadget designed to make sure hospital mixups were a thing of the past. Did it work? Oh, I'm sure it did. Did it eliminate hospital baby mixups? No, because somebody somewhere along the line thought it was a bad idea. We say bring this back! I don't want to raise some dirty stranger's baby for five years before I discover that he or she is not mine. [Medgadget]

@marc_wtih_a_c: I'm curious about when the day will come in which one cannot actually buy anything without having some sort of implanted biometric chip available.

I'm wondering why this idea never caught on with the broader body-mod crowd. Why get painful tattoos when you can brand yourself with ironic hipster logos or "tribal" swirls with the safety and precision of intense UV light?

nah, just come in a week later to do either a dna test, or blood type test (the former taking much longer, but more definitive). Or just do a blood type test at home (hey, that's not a bad idea).

Wonder how many of those kids came back with skin cancer 25 years later?
When my kids were born, circa 30 years ago, they attached matching bands to my wrist and the kidlet's ankle before they let us out of the delivery room, and those bands had to match up when kidlet was brought into the room for feeding et al.

How could you be heartless enough to want to bring this back?!!! It would really complicate my black-market baby business.

They have made this a lot more high tech now. Mom, dad and baby have bracelets that ID them as a specific family unit, which are attached in the delivery room and if any babies leave the floor at all, alarms go off triggering a lock down. Too many people trying to steal babies. Sad but true.

so is it branding them, or just tanning/sunburning it on so they can keep track of whose kid until it leaves

@infmom: Well, at least if they did get skin cancer, it would be skin cancer of the butt cheek. If you're going to lop anything off, may as well be that.

I think all babies should be branded/marked with their weight, blood volume, grade, status etc. This'll help with quality control.
Examples:
Male, 6.5lb, 295.1mL, Grade B, Certified for release
Male, 3lb, 1.362mL, Grade C, Release pending approval

The baby must be a girl and is crying because she just figured out that she will grow up to look like Mom and not that nurse hotty.

But I just looked at the ad again after your comment, I thought that was the dad at first....

@GadgetPlay: No, that's a boy. Back in the days when people thought searing kids was a good idea, no one valued the girls enough to worry about anyone snatching them. Only the boys were worth branding.

@Curves: Correct, and you and the baby stay in the same room at all times(barring medical complications), so it would be hard to "switch" babies today.

I think that the "mom" is J. Edgar Hoover in drag... Must have been part of his surveillance program.
