Register To Vote On Your Xbox 360?!
Posted by Jason Chen at 4:00 AM on August 22, 2008
Microsoft's just inexplicably joined up with Rock the Vote to allow Xbox Live gamers to register to vote, talk about the candidates and participate in preliminary presidential votes. It's unclear whether you can do all this from your Xbox 360 (our guess is no), but you should ask yourself this question: do you actually want the people you play with on Xbox Live to be one step closer to voting? So we can get four years of President Dick Hertz (VP candidate: Schweaty Balls)? [Image Credit - Niklas Hellerstedt]
REDMOND, Wash. -- Aug. 21, 2008 -- A leading gaming and entertainment platform just became a leading platform for change. Microsoft Corp. and Rock the Vote today announced a groundbreaking partnership that will allow Xbox 360 owners to register to vote, participate in presidential polls and voice their opinions to the presidential candidates. It will all happen through Xbox LIVE starting Monday, Aug. 25, the first day of the Democratic National Convention.
"Xbox is a natural partner to help us reach out to youth voters," said Heather Smith, executive director, Rock the Vote. "To realise our goal of registering 2 million young Americans by this fall, we need to go where young Americans are, and there's no doubt in our minds that many are on Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE."
This is the first time that Rock the Vote has joined forces with an entertainment partner such as Xbox to reach voters under 30. Xbox LIVE is the largest online social network connected to the television, with membership totaling 12 million -- if Xbox LIVE were a state, it would rank as the country's seventh largest, giving it approximately 20 electoral votes.
"The Xbox LIVE community is active, vocal and passionate," said Marc Whitten, general manager of Xbox LIVE. "We're thrilled to partner with Rock the Vote to make it easier than ever for youth voters -- and our members -- to register and be heard."
Through the Rock the Vote partnership, Xbox LIVE members will be able to register to vote, voice their opinions to the candidates through an exclusive forum and participate in potentially election-predicting polls. They will also be able to download Rock the Vote public service announcements.
Xbox also will have a presence at both the Democratic and Republican conventions, promoting the Rock the Vote partnership and educating delegates about creating a safer entertainment environment on Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE using the built-in parental controls known as Family Settings. These industry-leading settings allow parents to limit their children's access to video games and movies and manage their activity and communications on Xbox LIVE. For more information on Family Settings and other safety-enhancing gaming tools and resources, delegates can stop by the Xbox on-site kiosk or visit http://www.xbox.com/isyourfamilyset.

I've never understood the "Rock the Vote" thing. Do we really want to encourage the political participation of every apathetic, uninformed schlub? (Although, they often don't show up at the polls, anyway, and the Motor Voter Act means that anybody with a driver's license is registered already.)
@GiantEnemyCrab: "and now that McCain admits that he is for the draft being reinstated, "
Wait, what? Do you have a source for that, or are you joking or something?

@GiantEnemyCrab: Okay. I'm going to agree with this guy that it's probably reaching to assume that Sen. McCain actually supports reinstating the draft. Seems a more reasonable interpretation that he was 1) agreeing with the general comment on the state of the VA system, and 2) otherwise being polite and personable. I mean, see where the claim comes from, but I'm not convinced the comment stands up to such a rigorous parsing.

@GiantEnemyCrab: proof of the draft position please (and I'm talking an explicit "I support and will reinstate the draft" statement, not an "I could possibly, conceivably imagine a scenario whereby the draft would need to be used if someone nuked Mexico, Scotland and Israel as the start of an all out World War 3 offensive" statement).
And really, draft fear mongering? First of all, now that woman are allowed to be in active combat, someone could easily file a lawsuit challenging Rostker vs. Goldberg that would then have to include women in the draft (and you can imagine the shitstorm that would cause). Secondly, there is this thing called being a conscientious objector. Thirdly, just say you are gay. Fourth, just not going is totally an option. Worst case you get chucked in jail (which would suck, but I'll be damned if I let someone try to force me into a position where I compromise my beliefs). And fifth, I've NEVER met anyone who has served in the military who thought the draft was a good idea. Have you ever worked with someone who hated what they were doing? They tend to make things miserable for everyone. Now imagine that person in a combat situation and you having to rely on them to save your life. Screw. That.
McCain is a jerk, but fear mongering him supporting the draft is no better than the people saying Obama supports infanticide. Both of those assholes have plenty of things they've actually said to hold against them without resorting to making crap up or taking things out of context.

@Canthros: Also, also: the more I think about it, the more obvious it is that the audience member's comment about the draft is rhetoric intended to convey her impression of the deleterious effect that the state of the VA medical system likely has on enlistments. In that case, McCain's response is perfectly fine on its face value, because the comment he is responding to isn't calling for a draft, either.
You're free to disagree, of course, but I think it's probably a mistake to make anything much out of this.

@GiantEnemyCrab: Even if he did/does support it (and given the vaguery of his statement, you could spin that any number of ways), it's still a non-isssue. It's not the 60s anymore. Conducting and enforcing a draft in this day and age would be damn near impossible. What if you flat-out refuse to go? Are soldiers/national guard/police going to go door to door and forcibly pull you out of your house? Are they going to put you in prison? If so, where? Our prisons are crowded enough. Then there is the question of drafting women or even people who only speak spanish. What about people who are conscientious objectors? What if you are on drugs (both recreational and prescription)? Logistically, it would be a nightmare. Plus, the military is dramatically different now than in the 60s-70s (in terms of tactics and technology).
And hell, when congress voted to reinstate the draft in '04 ([thomas.loc.gov]), it died 2 to 402.
Really, even being remotely concerned about the draft is just silly. And if you are concerned, I'd be more concerned over the guy who has has actually sponsored legislation to reinstate it three times (Rep. Charles Rangle, NY) in the last four years than anybody else.

@dry-roasted-peanuts: Well, the fact that McCain nor any of his staffers have come out and said "No, he does NOT want the draft" is quite telling. I am not one for fear mongering, but for McCain to say he agrees with reinstating the draft, and then not to "correct" himself since then means that he was not mistake. He is for the draft.
@Canthros: Read above. Agreeing with "the draft needs to be reinstated" + not correcting himself since then = support for reinstating the draft.
See, I don't like politics spilling into other stuff like Gizmodo and certainly Xbox live. I think more attention on this important election is great, but discussion with fellow players will be a nightmare.

The only ones proposing the draft are the Democrats, who wish to use it to drum up fear and hatred of the war, and to stir class envy. This will all change if Obama is elected. All of a sudden we'll be winning the war, and there will be nothing but positive press coverage. How about Obama's seventh "Time" cover in less than a year?
@GiantEnemyCrab: "and now that McCain admits that he is for the draft being reinstated"

@GiantEnemyCrab: I read it. I don't think the argument you're making, or that the person at DailyKos is making, holds. It's very nearly preposterous. And this is without having seen any additional context to Senator McCain's comment.
Further, I can't find any reporting at CNN.com or MSNBC.com that supports that interpretation. Not saying they didn't mention it on air or whatever, but Googling isn't turning up anything but cranks and loonies in their comments.
Finally, if you don't like politics spilling into Gizmodo, why on Earth did you bring this up in the first place?

@Kaiser-Machead's WALL-E fetish:
They should just invent a register to vote by cellphone system.
Register you Phone # + IMEI + SSN + ZIP code or something.
Unless someone has all that info they cannot duplicate your vote.
You can vote only once from only one cellphone #... etc....
As far as privacy of vote goes, use one database to verify voter eligibility and tag if vote has been completed. Use another database to enter actual vote thus separating the vote from the voter.
See... easy. They could do the same from the internet.
DO I HAVE TO FIX EVERYTHING ?
