Quiksilver's The Ray Watch is Confusing, But Eco-Friendly
Posted by Kit Eaton at 8:05 PM on August 22, 2008
All those confusing-display watches from Tokyo flash have nothing on the impeccable eco-credentials of Quiksilver's upcoming watch. The Ray is analogue with a 27-jewel movement, though its display is unusual and looks like it'd take a while to get used to... but it's shipped in eco-friendly packaging by ship rather than by air (saving on CO2 emissions) and is made of largely recyclable materials. That's stuff like wood, stainless steel, aluminium, and mineral glass, and though I'm not sure it's the "world's first eco-friendly timepiece" it certainly sounds like a good idea. You'll probably have to be a rich eco-warrior to have one though: it's a limited run of 1,000 pieces, and the price is still to be announced. [Acquiremag]

How much carbon did _setting_up_ the manufacturing produce?
Carbon footprints in the sand...

@strider_mt2k: And I said, what about that time when there was only one set of carbon footprints in the sand?
And Al Gore said, "That's when you were paying me for carbon credits."

Is there something less 'eco-friendly' aboot the citizen ecodrive watches that require zero batteries evar, or the slew of other solar charged time devices. Why does this one merit our attention? They recycled glass and stainless steel - well congratulations, so does everyone else who wants to make money in the world.
raw product manufacturing = $$$
and slow boats kill the fishies. just sayin...

Really? A flip face that's not on a Dora the Explorer or Spider-Man watch? Ugh.

Fashion for elitists who think it's trendy to save the world and wear impractical jewelry.
I don't know what kind of consumer of the watch would annoy me more, the one who bought it because it was eco-friendly, or the one who thinks its hip that nobody can tell time on the damn thing.

It's like the debate between buying a new hybrid or sticking with an old used car.
The pocketwatch I carry is more than sixty years old, doesn't need batteries, and has much more style than this thing.

This is just proof that if you have any new conceptual product coming out, simply tag it "eco-friendly" and any retard with money will buy it.
Seriously though, congratulations to what ever ass hat came up with this idea. They get to cut initial cost by cheapening the packaging from a nice plastic or metal box to a recycled cardboard box, and they get to charge more for it. Well done, you've just cut enough carbon emissions to save a sparrow.
This type of shit makes me want to eat tuna flavored dolphin or crank up the temperature on my baby seal furnace.

@venomous_duck41: Dude, it's all about the whale oil. I use baby seal pelts to insulate my keg-a-rator. The cute ones have the highest R value.

@cartman005: Anyone who doesn't want to fumble for their phone in their pocket and then put it back again just to tell the time! With a watch you can tell the time in less than a second.

World's first eco-friendly timepiece? I think the inventors of the sundial, hourglass, water clock, etc might have something to say about that :)
