Question of the Day: Do You Consider Yourself a Fanboy?
Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:00 AM on August 13, 2008
The word fanboy gets thrown around a lot these days--so much so that Webster's decided to officially incorporate the term into the English language. Generally speaking, when referring to someone as a fanboy it is intended to be derogatory--but the bottom line is that Fanboyism is the root of all great nerdy debates. So, it is time to take a hard, honest look at yourself. Are you a fanboy? If so, what kind of fanboy are you? And if this poll turns out skewed heavily towards no, there are a whole lot of liars out there.

I don't think you're a fanboy if you like something that is simple, basic, supported, universal, powerful, and makes life so much sweeter.
I'm, of course, talking about command-line linux. Anything else is unworthy of your complete devotion.
(Apple will get there after they realize that it's "control" and "alt", not "command" and "option", among other small things)

I do consider myself a fanboy to some degree. I'm a fanboy of the iPhone, PC's/Microsoft, Nintendo, and Marvel. But if anything I think I'm more of an "anti-fanboy", usually taking more of a stance against one thing as opposed to a stance for it's competitor. I'm anti-Mac, anti-PS3, and anti-hardcore fanboys. Yeah, I'm weird. I know.

Anyways, I have everything from the PS3 and the 360 to the iPhone to the Alienware running XP. I stick to what I like and don't base it on blind brand loyalty(i.e. fanboy).
There's positives and negatives to every gadget out there... Key is to find the one that works best for you. Just because it works best for you doesn't make it or the company that made it, the holy freakin' grail. Annnnd, you definitely don't need to defend it at every freakin' whim.
This rant is aimed mostly at Apple sheep and to a lesser extent, 360 drones... Shut your yappers.

My only problem with any fanboy is that they take any comment that might be ever so slightly derogatory and go into full nuclear mode. Even if it is something like "I disagree with you, sir. I don't feel that the Wii can generate the same level of graphical detail or processing power as the PS3 or 360 and therefore I seriously doubt that you will see GTA4 on the Wii."You typicaly get a response of "Go @#$% yourself you retarded fanboy troll!"
Maybe it's just at me tho....

I'm pro consumer, thus not a fanboy. Purely self-interest since I myself am a consumer. Fanboys on the other hand are anti-themselves. Fanboyism (and brand-loyalty in general) allows businesses to profit more at our expense. Rather than being forced to deliver superior products at superior prices to stay on top of the competition, they can instead rely on the sheep that flock to their brand name.

Here's how my fanboyery works:
"Oh wow, Sonic '06 looks good!"
After reading reviews:
"Wow, that can't be right, I gotta check it out for myself!"
After buying the game at full price and beating it:
"Hey this isn't that bad. Money well spent!"
Then, after playing Sonic Adventure 2 for a bit and coming back to Sonic '06:
"What the fuck is this?!"
Repeat endlessly, with hopefully Sonic Unleashed breaking that cycle.

@ACDlite: The people who hate a company/brand/product have good reasons. I'll use my self for example. I refuse to buy apple products because I don't want to be ASSOCIATED with 99% of the people who use apple products. You know, the ignorant conformists who do not base their purchases on their actual needs, costs, features, usability, etc. They buy apple because they don't like microsoft, they are wanna-be hipsters, or both.
And it's not even like I dislike apple products. I think a lot of them are great! It's just that their users are so completely ignorant and simultaneously pompous that I will have zero association with it.

I love Apple product but i don't consider myself a fanboy cause apple makes some crappy stuff to, Things i love from them are, imac, macbook, iPods, Airport extreme, Apple tv and the iphone although i think is still buggy as hell. Things i hate from apple are, Bluetooth headset and that's about it, nice design but that thing is horrible to use. From microsoft, i gave up on them about 1 1/2 year ago after drinking their Kool aid all my live

I like great quality products and I'll probably tell you about why I like them. Will I waste my time trying to convince everybody to get it? Probably not.
I'm not the type of person that would rejoice to see "their brand" succeed and then get angry when it something happens that doesn't effect me directly or indirectly.
Example: Sony fanboys are outraged that FFXIII came to the 360 and feel its a major betrayal. Xbox fanboys rub it in the Sony FBs faces. I couldn't give a shit either way. I just see a great game that I now could just grab at the store.

Nintendo and Google Fanboy right here!
Bought a Pokemon N64 off ebay earlier this year, and started collecting games. Why?..... N64 is the best console EVAH!
And my friends think I'm weird because I use Google Products rather than Office, Hotmail etc.

@smackswell: "I'm a fanboy of Apple products, taco trucks and Trek bikes made in the 80's. Not necessarily in that order :D"
At least it's not, "Apple trucks, Trek Products and tacos made in the 80s." Man, that would smell.

YES. But, where do I start?
- Nintendo (hey, it's my childhood)
- Luigi (dunno why, but I've always liked him better)
- BMW (but mostly the cars made during the 80s)
- Apple (but I don't go around whoring for them or snobbing PCs)
- Sony PlayStation (I bought my PS3 because I knew eventually I'd have to to be able to play GT5 and GTAIV.)
- Adidas (but only certain models of casual shoes... I will forever lust after a pair of Team Zissou runners)
- Wes Anderson and Bill Murray movies (they're perfect. Especially Zissou)

I have less brand loyalty than a disloyalist who is a traitor to their perceived brand.
I may be a "fanboy" of cheap, well-performing things.

I'm really not biased towards anything in technology since I have realized that its a lot better to know every side of a topic and try everything at least once rather than taking a stance by overly exaggerating the pros and completely ignoring the cons. And it makes less people hate you :)

@frigg: My choice to not buy apple does not make me a conformist of something else. I base my gadget purchases on things I mentioned in my OP, like any smart consumer should. They only thing I will not consider is apple, obviously.

I don't think I'm a fanboy. I will admit to having brand loyalty. But I don't knee-jerk defend the stuff I buy as being superior in all ways to everything else out there.
It seems like to qualify as a fanboy you have to, well, be fanatic about something. Honestly, I find it pretty hard to be fanatic about a brand. If you make something good, I'll buy it. It someone makes it better or cheaper, I'll buy it from them.
I might be anti-fan. For example, I won't buy an iPod. That doesn't mean I'll only buy Zune's though. I just look for an mp3 player that is not iTunes based, and I buy the best one out there. I'm just not an Apple guy.

I've been called an Asian fanboy ever since started watching anime, but I like the cuisine because it's so different from the regular fare at home. Aside from that:
- Nintendo (it's got Zelda, Metroid and Super Smash Brothers)
- A good laptop (I don't care what it runs, as long as it suits my current needs)
- Gizmodo (I never miss a post and only end up on Engadget when redirected) and all the new stuff they announce
