Quake on iPhone Comes to Cydia Installer
Posted by Jason Chen at 3:40 AM on August 6, 2008
That Quake game for the iPhone we wrote about a few months back has made it onto Cydia, the jailbreak application repository. Just Another iPhone Blog says it's not too slow and it doesn't make use of the accelerometer (so it's probably not the version we wrote about before), but it does play fairly well. Seeing as it's not the one we wrote about before, we're not sure if it's even networked, but c'mon, Quake on iPhone! [Just Another iPhone Blog]

Wow, an old game that's already been modded to run on EVERY MOBILE DEVICE OUT THERE.
Truly, the iPhone is a testament to Steve's creation.
Hey Giz, let me know when you start having technology news, okay? Just poke me awake.

The best thing to happen to my iPhone (Classic) was that i went ahead and poked that plastic cover behind the left speaker cover on the bottom... I can finally hear sound coming out of this thing! It is like a whole new phone with this quick simple "fix"...

Umm... yeah. We've had a review up on this game for over a week. You can actually check our site for the latest information about Cydia packages available as well. In short, the gameplay is pretty good and we've talked to the developer some as well: They're still working on making it more user-friendly, but right now it's totally playable. Check out the full review:

If the controls are on top of the game how can you see what the hell you're doing? Won't you're chubby fingers get in the way?

OLD NEWS. C'MON Giz. After calling Cydia the replacement to Installer, and late news bits like these, I'll just ignore your iPhone posts.

Once this is out, this and a lot of other apps (NES) will be much more playable:

@lpranal: I would be all over some marble madness on the iPhone. You don't even know.

I loaded this up on and played it for about oh... maybe 1 minute and a half, at which point the first enemy killed me. I'm sure you could get sort of good at it... but, why? It's just not fun to play on the iphone. With Star Wars: the Force Unleashed, this, that quake 3 demo a while ago, it makes one wonder- who is picking all these games to port?
There are a ton of RPG's that would work well on the iphone, as well as RTS games (for the love of god, would someone out there PLEASE port age of mythology??). Why anyone would want to play any kind of action game on the iphone is beyond me. Where is freaking marble madness, people?

@graffiksguru: I'm not mad at Jason, I'm disappointed in the lack of creativity of application developers. It's like they can't think of a way to make a creative game with out throwing more buttons on it. People need some user interface classes.

With those controls how would you circle strafe while jumping and firing? If you are turning right isn't your hand covering the while left part of the screen? Seems dubious to me.

More crappy direct ports from controller based systems to the iPhone.

Couple things... Yes, the developer is working on making this compatible with the "iPhone Control Pad" - see the link above. Secondly, I'd love to accelerometer support as we mentioned in the review over at CTA. Seriously, check it out.

@tptcat: Thanks for reposting that... I read about that before I bit the bullet and got an iphone, and then forgot about it. Now I'm actually pretty psyched for it, esp. since this thing's "more powerful than the DS and PSP combined". I sure wish there was an analog stick in the future... but hey, beggars can't be choosers, right?

@Benjaminx: Well you can technically run it in the NES emulator, with tilt controls, but considering how awesome it COULD be, with infinite axes (vs. cheesy dpad emulation) of movement and jumping actions... i'm getting ahead of myself again. ah well, I can dream.

Tried it. Two things:
1)No strafe.
2)No save.
